💪We, the local communities, continue to strengthen our voice from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia 🇲🇳

👉As part of the UNCCD COP17, we participated in the second coordination meeting of the Local Communities Caucus, alongside representatives from organizations in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
During this meeting, we analyzed opportunities and challenges, reviewed the caucus’s founding documents, and received an update on the status of negotiations with representatives from the European Union, Brazil, and Panama.

👀One of the main agreements was to maintain our coordination and communication, regardless of the decisions made regarding civil society participation in this COP.

As part of the UNCCD COP17, 35 representatives from community organizations in 17 countries: Afghanistan, the Philippines, Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, India, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Somalia, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Namibia, Nepal, and Peru, participated in the first meeting titled

👉“Toward a Local Communities Caucus at the UNCCD,” with the goal of collectively advancing the establishment of an Assembly or “Caucus” of Local Communities.

📝During the meeting, participants worked on a founding declaration, the priorities of local communities for COP17, and criteria for identification and self-identification, based on elements such as shared history and culture, collective land management, distinct forms of governance, and self-ascription.

This process builds on the 2024 COP16 agreement to establish the Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ Caucus within the UNCCD. However, the United States’ objections to various agenda items related to civil society participation could delay its formation.

🙌A delegation from the Global Forum of Local Communities on Climate Change, comprising representatives from Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, and Nepal, is actively participating in this process, sharing experiences and lessons learned regarding the participation of local communities in the UNFCCC.
