South Cumbria Rivers Trust

South Cumbria Rivers Trust We're a charity aiming to protect, conserve & monitor the freshwater environments of South Cumbria. There are four main elements to our work:
1.

The aquatic environment of South Cumbria, its quality and the range of beneficial plants and animals it supports are under constant pressure. This pressure comes from all of us in a variety of ways: how much water we use and what we put down our drains to name a few. The Trust works hard to ensure that we are constantly monitoring and surveying the South Cumbria area and making practical habitat i

mprovements wherever possible. SCRTs area contains five major water catchments and these are : the Duddon valley, Coniston Water and River Crake, Lake Windermere and Leven, the Kent and the Bela. Monitoring and surveying such as electro-fishing surveys and water quality monitoring. What we find, allows us to direct our efforts where it is needed

2. Practical habitat improvements such as providing fish passes and improving the quality of habitat that many of our species rely on including ourselves!

3. Control of invasive non-native species which if introduced to our rivers and lakes can cause serious damage and even loss of our native flora and fauna

4. Increasing awareness and education of the local community and visitors about our natural heritage of rivers and lakes, and how and why they need protection

If you would like to get involved with our work, then please look at our volunteering opportunities on our website: www.scrt.co.uk

📣Works are starting next week on a large weir removal in South Cumbria.
Starnthwaite Ghyll weir, measuring 12 metres wide, is one of two weirs on the River Gilpin. Built in the 1930s, this now redundant and deteriorating structure is due to be removed over the coming weeks by our contractors JBA Consulting.
Not only will removal improve migratory routes for salmonoid species and European eels, it will restore connectivity, reinstate natural sediment transport and increase habitat diversity.
With thanks to our funders the European Open Rivers Programme - a grant giving organisation dedicated to restoring rivers and the Environment Agency.
We will keep you updated with progress🌍

We have some Balsam Bashing days coming up, as part of our efforts to of invasive species in South Cumbria.
Prevention is key and you can support your local river through simple action. Remember when you enter a river or lake. Always any clothing or equipment after an activity and help keep our rivers safe from pesky invasives.

In May, Hannah and Oliver were at the 2026 the River Restoration Centre Conference in Newport, joining professionals from across the environmental sector 🌍
Sessions covered a range of topics including Stage Zero restoration, Natural Flood Management and how we measure success.
Here at SCRT we will continue to improve our knowledge of project delivery, learning new techniques and tools in order to support river restoration across South Cumbria. We work for our

With the help of volunteers, the site is now clear of debris which impact reedbed growth. If you're interested in freshwater and would like to volunteer, sign up to our Better Impact page where we post different activities for you to get involved with: https://app.betterimpact.com/PublicOrganization/1f604cb0-130c-4f1e-a54a-04b9bec5d12f/1

Our recent Riverfly training days were a huge success, with eight new volunteers trained up to sample river invertebrates. These special creatures can provide us with key data about a river catchment and any potential impacts, like barriers and pollution. We also ran an extended course for our long serving volunteers, to learn more species!
We're the South Cumbrian Hub for the Riverfly Partnership - a countrywide collective, assessing river health and species. Get in touch if you're interested in finding out more.

We we're recently at the Windermere Science Festival enjoying the activities, sunshine and smiles. We focussed on our work around including invasive species control, reedbed restoration and advice on private sewage systems. There were many a wildlife badge too! 🌼
If you missed us, we'll be at the Windermere Jetty Museum again in a few weeks time for the Festival of the Lake 2026. Come say hello 😄

The Windermere Septic Tank Programme (STEP) has now come to a close. Funded by the UK Government, this development programme aimed to:
- Develop a risk framework
- Evaluate different engagement approaches
- Understand impact and behaviour change
One key output = the creation of an engagement toolkit that organisations and community groups can use across the country, to engage local residents about private sewage systems. We took the first STEP, so you don't have to.
Find our webinar where we discuss key findings and results here: https://youtu.be/lmCm_90OXD8
Use our toolkit, including key resources, to create similar programmes in your area: https://callofnature.info/step-toolkit/

Pollution comes from various sources. Proactive prevention can help reduce environmental impact and improve water quality. Thank you to local participants and your feedback - 96% would recommend taking part in the programme. Here's to small but cumulative impact in
