St Mary's Hospice

St Mary's Hospice Thanks to our community we can continue to make a difference when it matters most At St Mary's care is provided free of charge, but it is not cost free.

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness. Our facilities and services are available to all adults who are facing the end of life, and to their families, carers and the bereaved. Patients with life limiting illnesses are cared for at the Hospice, as inpatients or by attendance at day cl

inics or therapy sessions, and - increasingly - at home. We care for patients facing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, and for those who love them. Patients and carers may access our holistic programmes, addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, at any stage of an illness. Just to maintain our current services costs around £3.5 million a year.

Free Soothing Sound Baths - Now in Ambleside ✨

Through our St Mary’s Hospice Wellbeing service, we have received wonderful feedback from clients who have attended our free Sound Bath sessions at the hospice in Ulverston. People have shared the positive impact the sessions have had on their wellbeing, relaxation, and sleep creating a sense of calm and connection.
Because of this positive feedback, we are delighted to be expanding our free wellbeing offer further into the community, with new sessions now available in Ambleside and Barrow.

These free sessions offer time to rest and unwind through guided relaxation, accompanied by the soothing sounds and vibrations of singing bowls and other instruments.

Open to people living with life-limiting conditions, carers, and those experiencing grief.
This will be located at Kelsick Grammar, Ambleside, on Monday 7th July at 6:00pm till 7:30pm.

If you would like to find out more information or book an assessment to attend, please contact the St Mary’s Hospice Wellbeing Team on 01229 444407.

💜 Thank you Thursday 💜

This week, we're celebrating some of our incredible supporters who have gone above and beyond for St Mary's Hospice-

🏃‍♂️ Just the thought of a half marathon is enough to make most of us reach for a cup of tea and a sit down... but not fundraising superstar Robbie Gaffney! Robbie recently took on the Manchester Half Marathon and raised an incredible £620 for the hospice. Thank you, Robbie, we think 13.1 miles deserves a medal, and raising £620 deserves a standing ovation too! 👏

Robbie said: "I was more than pleased to raise funds for the hospice. Lots of people I have known have used their services, including someone close to me more recently. I know how important it is to raise funds for them and how much they rely on donations."

🏫 A massive thank you to everyone at Low Furness C of E Primary School, Great Urswick. Head Teacher Helen Morrison, along with pupils Sylvie and Niamh, recently visited the hospice to present a fantastic donation of £832, raised through fun runs, fairs, raffles and much more. What an amazing achievement!

🌸 A huge thank you to Tyth Barn Nurseries for their generous donation of flowers to St Mary's Hospice. These beautiful additions are helping our gardens bloom and creating an even more welcoming environment for our patients, families, volunteers and visitors- please take a look next time you visit our Orangery cafe.

🚶‍♀️ It was also a pleasure to meet Maria Jepson, Deborah Sargeant, Stephanie McGill and the fantastic DFN Project SEARCH Interns at Furness College. This amazing group raised a whopping £360.25 by walking along the canal in Ulverston, and even more special, they chose St Mary's Hospice as their charity of choice themselves. The walk was full of smiles, determination and teamwork – and, in a rare moment of cooperation, the weather behaved itself too!

From fundraising challenges and school events to flower donations and sponsored walks, every act of support helps us continue providing care and support across our community.

Thank you all for being such incredible supporters💙

It was a pleasure to meet Steve Clawley at St Mary’s earlier this week. The visit was particularly special as it coincided with Steve’s birthday and marked the beginning of his support for the hospice as his chosen Charity of the Year during his captaincy at Furness golf club!

Steve explained: “I’m very pleased to choose St Mary’s as my charity. I wanted to keep the funds raised local, and it is also a charity that is very close to our hearts.”

Steve has already raised an impressive £540 during his Captain’s Away Trip and is hoping to raise even more at a Glam Rock Night, featuring Neon Spacetrain, this Saturday at Furness Golf Club, with all proceeds supporting St Mary’s Hospice🙌

Thank you, Steve, for your generosity and commitment. Your support is greatly appreciated and will make a real difference to the patients and families we care for💜

Job Vacancy – Furniture Warehouse Operative / Driver 📢

Hours: 35 hours per week including Saturdays on a rota basis
Salary: £13.53 per hour
Closing Date: 29th June 2026

We are looking for a new member of our Furniture Warehouse team to help collect donations, organise deliveries, support customers and make a daily difference for St Mary's Hospice.

This is a hands-on, energetic and physically demanding role. You'll need to be able to safely lift, carry and move furniture and other donated items as part of your daily work.

No two days are the same. One moment you could be collecting a donated sofa, the next serving a customer on the till, helping merchandise the showroom or preparing stock for sale. Our warehouse is busy, varied and full of opportunity to make an impact.

We were delighted to welcome Tim Farron to St Mary’s South Lakes base at Kelsick Grammar in Ambleside last week.

The visit was a great opportunity to showcase our growing partnership with Kelsick Grammar and how, by working together, we are making hospice care and support more accessible across the South Lakes.

We also highlighted the importance of raising awareness that hospice care is about much more than end-of-life support. St Mary’s is here for people and their families from the point of diagnosis and long after. A patient or family member doesn't have to be cared for by St Mary's to access our services, we are here for the whole community.

Thank you, Tim, for taking the time to visit us 💜

This week is Loneliness Awareness Week 💙

Loneliness is something many of us experience at different points in our lives. At St Mary’s, we offer a range of community groups that not only support you through specific situations, but also bring people together, build connections and foster friendships.

Our bereavement groups are open to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. Whether your bereavement was two weeks, two months or two years ago, you are welcome.

Here are just a few photos from some of our wonderful groups, spanning from Millom, Barrow, Ulverston, Grange, Winderemere and Ambleside. From craft sessions and singing groups to gardening, woodland wellness, retreats - and even a grief disco! There’s something for everyone.

Together, we can help break the stigma around loneliness and grief, and create spaces where people feel able to connect, share and support one another.

If you’d like to find out more about any of our community or bereavement groups, please send us a message or call 01229 444407 - we’d love to hear from you. 💙
