Laura lives in a rural Highland village and struggles to stay warm in her home. Her home is draughty, and her underlying health conditions make her particularly vulnerable to the cold.

She relies on oil for hot water, but the rising cost of heating oil makes it difficult to budget. But thanks to support from the Highlands Energy Community Partnership, she received £300 from the Scottish Government’s Emergency Heating Fund and is now registered on the Priority Services Register.

Laura’s story reflects the experiences of many who live in rural Scotland. Our findings in A Perfect Storm: 2026 Update on Fuel Poverty in Rural Scotland report highlight the impact of high energy costs and energy-inefficient homes in the Highlands.
