We have been asked many times about the fate of the orcas released from the Whale Jail. There's finally some good news! One of these whales, nicknamed Zina, was spotted this August among a group of wild whales. This exciting update was shared today by Ekaterina Dzhikiya during a presentation at the MARECEDU 2024 conference. According to the tour operators who observed her, Zina looked healthy and happy. She is easily recognizable by the scars from satellite tag and by distinctive eye patch shape.

May this magnificent killer whale swim through vast, open waters with strength and grace. May she enjoy a long, healthy life, filled with boundless energy, surrounded by the beauty of her natural home and the company of her pod. Here’s to her well-being, resilience, and the freedom to thrive in the deep blue sea for many years to come.

A newborn Southern Resident, fantastic news! 🖤🌊 💙 🐋 🤍
"Today was not the day we expected! After hearing all three pods on the hydrophones last night, we got up early and scanned the west side of from north to south without turning up any dorsal fins. A couple hours later, we got word of heading west from and assumed they were all heading back out.

Then, in early afternoon came a report of an with a young calf off heading north. At first we assumed 's, but thanks to back of the camera shots that were shared by , we realized the adult was , a 31 year-old female who has not been documented with a before and who is the ONLY surviving member of the matriline.

We caught up with the pair at . Just as surprising as the calf was perhaps the fact that there were no other in sight: it was just the two of them! Over the next five hours, they went back and forth on the west side, and we were able to catch up to them at several viewpoints on shore.

While unexpected, it's not totally without precedent for new moms to take some space away from the rest of the group or for a single , even a small one, to be in inland waters on their own. Thankfully, the Center for Whale Research was able to get on scene and should have a more complete update in the days ahead."

Thank you ~
