Residents in Ridgewood may have noticed that the “Bow Bells” milepost is currently absent from its home at the side of the Eastbourne Road near New Road. It has stood on this spot for over 200 years, marking 44 miles from Bow Bells church in London along the old turnpike road to the coast. It is one of 4 we have in Uckfield, among numerous more along the A22 and A26, which combined make up the longest continuous run of ancient mileposts in the country. Each were locally cast of Sussex iron, and symbolically include 4 bells strung on ribbon with a bow at the top… no doubt a better way to display the Bow Bells destination when fewer local people could read or write.
“Buckle 44” is so called because like all the mileposts between Uckfield and Eastbourne it includes a “Pelham buckle” at the very top, the symbol of the local family of the same name. This toll road branch from Eastbourne joined the other branch from Lewes at what is still to this day called “Union Point”, marked by the roundabout in front of the Highlands Inn. What changes this post has witnessed in its lifetime.
Unfortunately, a number of these posts have gone missing from the roadside in recent years, presumed stolen, but this is not the case for Buckle 44. It was attached to a new wooden backing post only 10 years ago, but this was already becoming rotten and was leaning towards the road at a precarious and growing angle. As a result, it was decided to remove the post before it fell - it is now in the safe keeping of a Brighter Uckfield volunteer, and will be restored and returned to the roadside over the next few months, complete with a more sturdy oak backing post matching that of its twin at the other end of New Road.
