Repair Café Uckfield We fix portable items from appliances to bicycles, computers to clothing, toys to furniture, as well as a tool sharpening service.

Plus we have a café with fab cake! FAQs
~ Repairing things is good for us, our customers and the planet
~ We are a group of volunteers that meet once a month to try to repair things
~ We like to work with our customers to educate and encourage the repair culture
~ Our sessions are on the fourth Saturday of the months January to November
~ We accept items fo repair from 9.30 until 12 noon
~ We don't charge for our time or parts, but customers can make voluntary donations
~ We welcome all portable items, however please bear in mind we may be limited by space
~ We're not keen on large screeen TVs, mobile phones, and microwaves for various reasons
~ You don't need to book an appointment, but you may have to wait for a repairer to become free
~ We have a selection of spares in stock but sometimes a repair needs something to be ordered in
~ We have a cafe with drinks and homemade cakes to make the waiting enjoyable

This little radio was another item brought in to the Repair Cafe last month.

Its owner explained that it had been a gift from his father back in 1957, and had been well used and well travelled, until it stopped working 40 years ago. He wanted to be able to listen to it again, so he brought it in to see if it could be fixed.

Our repairer had a thorough look at it to see what components were working, and took it back home to work on. After replacing some faulty components, repairing the internal aerial, and a broken wire, the radio is now working again much to the delight of its owner.

Another item that was brought in for repair last month, was this digital TV recorder.

The owner had had it for some time, but it had recently developed a fault. He explained that it had started to overheat, and then switch off. He originally thought the issue was the fan, so he purchased a new one, but the unit still kept overheating, so he brought it to the Repair Cafe.

One of our repairers took a look, and confirmed that the issue was not the fan, but an issue with the wiring that switches the fan on and off. The sensor switch that turns the fan on wasn't operating properly (hence the overheating), so our repairer decided the best option was to bypass the sensor switch and have the fan running continuously to keep the drive cool, and working.

The owner went away happy in the knowledge that he could carry on using his TV recorder without it overheating.

One of the items brought in to the Repair Cafe last Saturday was this this very decorative fabric cover.

It had come off a pouffe stool (a soft, cushion-like seat or footrest), and at some point had been overstuffed, causing the stitching along the zip to break.

One of our sewing ladies was able to mend it using her sewing machine to reattach the zip to the rest of the cover, and it now looks good as new!

Thank you to everyone who attended our Repair Cafe on Saturday.

We had a steady stream of visitors bringing in items, which included a old radio, a clock, and a vacuum cleaner.

Out of the 35 items brought in, 16 items were repaired during the morning, 6 items were advised on, 10 items were taken home to be fixed by our repairers, and there were 3 items that unfortunately were beyond repair!

We’d like to remind you that our next Repair Cafe is this coming Saturday!

As always, our repairers will be ready and waiting to take a look at your broken or damaged items (whether that’s household appliances, electronics, textiles, clocks, toys or even bicycles), while you enjoy a beverage and tasty snack from our cafe.

We also have a sharpening service for your garden tools, and some tech savvy people who are able to help with I.T issues!

Bring your items to the Victoria Pavilion between 9.30 -12 on Saturday, and our repairers will do their best to mend them.

Another item that was brought in for repair last month was this printer. The owner explained that she had had it for five years, and recently it had stopped working properly. For some reason, the paper was getting jammed.

One of our repairers was happy to take a look, and once he gained access to the inner workings, he investigated the reason for the paper getting jammed. He discovered that part of the mechanism for feeding the paper through the printer was the culprit, but couldn’t work out why the mechanism was getting in the way.

Sadly, despite the best determined efforts of our repairer, the printer was beyond help. On the plus side the owner can now go ahead and dispose of it, knowing that she tried to to fix it.

We wanted to remind you that in addition to our general repair services (for household items, and textiles, etc), we also have an ‘I.T’ department to assist you with your tech issues.

If you have a computer, printer or other device that’s not working properly, bring it along and our tech wizards will do their best to fix it, or give you advice on how to deal with the issue.

Here's a pair of jeans that came in to the repair cafe last month.

They were well worn and had several rips that needed mending. As they were well made jeans the owner wanted to get them repaired. He explained that the Swedish company who made them actually offers a repair service, but it’s located in London, so he brought them to the repair cafe instead.

One of our sewing ladies successfully mended all the rips, and the owner of the jeans went away happy!

Last month, one of the items brought in for repair was this mountain bike. It had a broken chain, and on closer inspection, our expert also noticed the rear mechanism was bent.

It was a fiddly job, but he successfully repaired the broken chain, and also managed to straighten the bent mechanism, so the bike was once again in working order, and ready for the owner to enjoy riding on.

Another item that came into the repair cafe was this USB radio. The owner had brought it in because the USB socket had come loose and been lost.

Our audio specialist needed to order a replacement and therefore took the radio home so he could finish the repair when the new part had been delivered. The new USB socket has since been fitted, and the radio is once again working!

Another successful repair and another happy customer!
