It is with a hugely heavy heart that we share the news that Tim one our Repair Cafe Coordinators has sadly passed away after a short ilness.

Tim had such a hugely positive impact on the Uckfield community, with his successful framing business, the art trail, bridge arts and the repair cafe none of which would have happened without him.

Tim drove the cafe to where it is today, always striving to make it better. He was so generous with his time and amazing fixing skills always taking homework home, organising repairers. He came to the cafe with a smile and a was great friend to the whole team. It simply won't be the same at the Repair Café without him and he will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with Diana, their whole family and his many friends at this very difficult time.

As well as mending items, the repair cafe also offers bike servicing and repairs.

The other month we had a bike come in that needed damaged brake cables replacing, and the gears adjusting. Our bike specialist set about swapping out damaged break cables with ones supplied by the owner, and then started the tricky job of making adjustments to the gears.

As adjusting the gears can take some time, our volunteer took the bike back with him to finish making the adjustments, and delivered it back to its owner when it was ready.

Another item that was brought into the repair cafe recently was this mechanical doorbell.

It had stopped working and when the owner went to take a look at it to see if he could fix it, all the components sprung apart, so he brought it along to see if it could be put back together and mended.

One of our repairers took up the challenge of reassembling the doorbell to see if he could get it working again. After a mornings work, and much determination, our repairer had the doorbell back together, and almost had the bell ringing properly.

Hopefully with a little more tweaking this old style doorbell will once again be announcing the arrival of visitors.

This German clock was brought in to the repair cafe last month due to a problem with the chime.

Its owner explained that rather than chiming on the hour, it was chiming on the quarter. Our clock expert took a look at it, and it turns out the solution was rather simple - it was just a case of carefully repositioning the hands of the clock, so that they were put back in sync with the chiming mechanism.

A nice straight forward repair we had last month was this car tyre pump. It's owner had been using it, and went to unplug it from the car when the plug section came off the end of the power cable.

When it was brought in for repair, all that was required was to reconnect the wiring using a soldering iron. Our repairer also added a mini cable tie to prevent the plug pulling apart in the future. After successfully testing it, our customer went away happy.

Another item repaired last month was this rather nice portable music system.

It had been stored away, and when the owner had tried to use it, he found that the CD tray wouldn't open. The repair cafe’s audio expert had a thorough look inside, and in the end took it home with him to continue working on the issue.

In the end, our expert concluded that the reason the CD tray wouldn’t work properly was that over time heat had caused the plastic to warp, and dry out the grease that helped the components move freely. Luckily, after several hours work, he was able to get the CD tray working again.

Another item that was brought to the repair cafe last month was a well used wheel barrow, that was at the time unusable due to the wheel being seized up with rust.

With the help of a hammer and some WD40, one of our repairers was able to get the wheel moving freely again, and another customer went away happy!

This coffee grinder was the first of three coffee related items to be brought in for repair last month.

The lady who owned it had inherited it from her father, and had been using it for some time when it stopped working. She didn't like the idea of throwing it away, so wondered if it could be fixed.

One of the repairers took a look at it and diagnosed a problem with the switch. After giving the switch a good clean up from the inside, and removing dirt (and particles of coffee!), its owner was delighted to see the coffee grinder working again!

This little mouse was one of the visitors to the repair cafe last Saturday. As you can see it's nose nose had off, so he had been put in a drawer for safe keeping until he could be mended.

One of the sewing ladies was happy to help, and set about reattaching the little mouses nose and whiskers, much to the delight of it's young owner and her mum.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Repair Cafe on Saturday.

Although a little quiet (probably due to the hot bank holiday weekend), we had a steady stream of visitors bringing in items, which included a wheelbarrow, a coffee machine, and a portable music player.

Out of the 27 items brought in, 17 items were repaired during the morning, 6 items were advised on, 4 items were taken home to be fixed by our repairers, and there were no items that were beyond repair!
