Talyllyn Railway

Talyllyn Railway Historic narrow-gauge steam railway running through unspoilt Snowdonia. The line runs from Tywyn. The trip takes about an hour each way.
(1076)

Experience the nostalgia of historic steam trains in some of Wales’ finest countryside. The railway starts on the coast at Tywyn, snakes through the foothills of Cader Idris to Dolgoch Falls, Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol. The train clings to the hillside as it passes through woodland and over ravines. Your ticket allows you to break your journey and extend your day: you could take a country walk,

explore wooded paths, discover waterfalls or visit the beach. Tywyn Wharf station is home to the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, which tells the story of little railways across Britain, and King’s Cafe which has hot and cold menus, lunch time specials and a licensed bar. Quarryman’s Tea Room at Abergynolwyn serves a range of refreshments and light bites.

"They call her 'The Old Lady'. She is an 0-4-0 narrow-gauge steam engine, and she works on the Talyllyn Railway in Northern Wales. Built in 1865, she is one of the oldest operating locomotives in the world." - Carson Davidson, Railway with a Heart of Gold (1965)

Dolgoch is a very old locomotive indeed! Where do you rank her amongst the other engines? You can visit all our engines on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales - we're running every day until November!

“Spent the morning at The Talyllyn Railway today and shared a carriage with a lovely older couple who were away for a few days visiting some of the railways.

I didnt speak to them much. Just some polite pleasantries every so often.

I sat and watched the world outside the window go by but my attention kept getting drawn back to the couple. Over the course of the 3 hours I spent in that carriage with them, I noticed something.

Throught the journey, this wonderful couple were chatting, he was telling little jokes that she would laugh at, she would spot animals and birds out of the window, they would chit chat, talking about yesterdays adventures, smiling to each other and genuinely being present in the moment, enjoying each other’s company. He’d be asking if she was okay, she’d say how she was fine

For the last part of the journey back all they did was hold each others hand, watch the scenery pass by and occasionally look at eachother and smile.

For those 3 hours, this gorgeous, anonymous couple gave me a glimpse into their life together, their up and downs, struggles snd triumphs and the countless years they may have been together to get to today. To be in the moment and just live….together.”

Be in the moment with us at the Talyllyn Railway, every day.

"Nearly three years ago, I was fortunate to have a wonderful time at the Everything Goes Gala and the Slate Trail. The occasion of the 75th Anniversary Gala and night time running sounded too good to miss.

The Talyllyn Railway seems to quietly lead the way in running a railway professionally and safely, while also enabling everyone to have a good time and making the little allowances here and there that provide attendees with a better-than-expected experience.

A delightful railway line in beautiful scenery in spring, an interesting programme, a good variety of trains, and then the Talyllyn family. Everyone is a credit to the railway and to each other, and it is great to see youngsters being given and taking responsibility for doing their bit for the railway. If you haven’t been, then you are missing a treat.

I’m just really sorry to say that, as a naturalist, the whole event was upstaged by a Pine Marten crossing the viaduct at Dolgoch just before a train was due. Reintroduced to Wales a few years ago, they are now spreading, and at least one is making the most of the railway. I can’t blame it. Well done to everyone (and the Pine Marten!)"

⚡️Meet our new Battery Electric locomotive⚡️

Built by Wingrove & Rogers in 1962, it is our very first electric loco and newest addition to the fleet in some years!

Today it has arrived back at the Railway and touched down on TR metals for the very first time. It first arrived in 2022 but has spent time away at Alan Keef Ltd. being re-gauged among other work.

Some bits are missing, such as the batteries, and there is still plenty of work to be done. The loco is now at Pendre where the restoration efforts will continue, make sure you're following us across our social media platforms to keep up to date with the project!

You may ask will it have a name, what number will it be - and most importantly - what colour will it be? To this we say please be patient, all will be revealed in good time!

Nothing hurts a little fun though, so go on - what colour would you paint it and what name do you think suits? Let us know in the comments below! 👇️
