To help protect your staff, customers, and operations, you may wish to consider the following practical adjustments:
• Workforce Welfare: Relax dress codes to allow light, breathable clothing. Ensure statt have constant access to chilled water and take regular breaks in cool areas.
• Flexible Hours: Consider shifting shift patterns or allowing earlier starts/later finishes to help staff avoid commuting during the peak heat (11
AM - 3 PM).
• Adjusted Trading Hours: Footfall is expected to drop during midday peak temperatures and rise in the cooler evening. You may wish to adjust your opening hours accordingly.
• Premises Management: If you have air conditioning, pre-cool your building early in the morning. Turn off non-essential electronic equipment to reduce internal heat buildup. Use blinds on sun facing windows and keep internal doors (where possible) open to maximise cross breezes.
• Waste Control: Please ensure all food waste is securely sealed and binned promptly, as high temperatures accelerate odours and attract pests, (consider double bagging food waste).
If your business has effective air conditioning, you might wish to consider acting as a “Cool Haven” by allowing vulnerable residents or passersby to step inside for a few minutes to cool down.

Legal Reminder: While the UK doesn’t have a statutory maximum working temperature, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that workplace temperatures must be “reasonable.” Under a Red Warnina standard If you have any immediate concerns or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to help
