Based in Tunbridge Wells, the mission of The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre is: To ensure that everyone impacted by cancer in our community has the love, care and support they need.

Just a little reminder that you don’t need a referral to come to Pickering.

There’s no need to speak to your GP or wait for someone to refer you. If you’re affected by cancer — whether you have a diagnosis yourself or you’re supporting someone you love — you’re welcome here.

You don’t need an appointment either. Simply come along and ring the doorbell. We’ll welcome you in, pop the kettle on and give you the time and space you need — whether that’s a chat, a listening ear or simply somewhere to sit for a while.

We know walking through the door for the first time can feel like a big step, but there will always be a friendly face waiting to welcome you.

Did you know we offer a range of complementary therapies and activities for our regular visitors here at Pickering?

One of these is our Seated Massage.

Sometimes, taking a little time for yourself can make a difference, especially when you're going through a difficult time.

Our seated massage is a gentle, hands-on treatment where you remain fully clothed and sit comfortably in a specially designed chair.

Our therapist focuses on the back, neck and shoulders, where we often hold tension during times of stress, helping you take a moment to relax and unwind.

It's just one of the ways we support the wellbeing of our visitors here at Pickering.

Freya Hodge joined our board in 2026 and is our youngest trustee to date but brings a raft of both professional and personal experience to the role. Freya graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in journalism and she loves telling stories - whether that's through an article, a short-form video, a magazine feature or a brand's social media.

Freya is a journalist working for a B2B trade magazine publisher. Previously, she worked as a Marketing and PR Assistant at local accountancy firm and also gained experience at Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine, writing Q&A interviews, local news and feature pieces.

In her third year at university, Freya was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma and became a visitor at Pickering. Today, she’s both a member of the Teenage Cancer Trust's Creative and Campaigns Group, and a Trustee for Pickering.

“These are both roles that let me use my skills for causes that genuinely matter to me,” says Freya. “Being trusted to help steer a charity is easily one of the things I'm proudest of.”

In her spare time, Freya likes to paint, trawl through vintage shops and loves reading.

TWODS will be bringing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the stage from 18th–21st November 2026.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to TWODS - Tunbridge Wells Operatic & Dramatic Society for so kindly donating tickets to Pickering for our visitors to enjoy.

Today is World Mental Health Day 💛

We know that a cancer diagnosis can bring so many different feelings with it — not just during treatment, but afterwards too. There can be worry, anxiety, exhaustion, fear about what comes next or simply days when everything feels a little harder.

And we know it can be difficult for the people around you too. Partners, family and friends often carry their own worries while trying to support someone they love.

That’s why our door is always open. Whether you need to talk, have a cup of tea, sit quietly for a while or simply be around people who understand, you’re always welcome at Pickering.

You don’t have to have the right words. Just come as you are.

With The Great British Bake Off back on our screens, Loch decided to hold a Bake Off of their own!

Last week, our wonderful supporters at Loch held a cake bake event to raise funds for Pickering, with our Centre Manager, Caroline and Trustee, Angela Ward, given the very important job of judging the entries. Although, in their words, “We’re not sure which one of us was Nigella!”

After the all-important tasting, the winning bake was the delicious gluten-free chocolate brownies, made by Olivia Bobbett. Congratulations, Olivia!

A huge thank you to everyone at Loch for choosing to support Pickering, and to everyone who baked, donated and took part.

Dr Helen Yates joined our board in the summer of 2026, having recently retired as a GP at Grosvenor and St James Medical Practice in Tunbridge Wells, where she worked for 34 years.

Helen brings with her a wide experience of being there for patients undergoing cancer treatment and recognises the important role The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre plays in providing vital emotional support during active treatment and afterwards.

She says: “For many years I have been signposting patients to the Pickering Centre and hearing only good things back about the fantastic support they provide. Increasingly stretched medical services only focus on medical treatment and not the person as a whole and the devastation a diagnosis makes on so many facets of their life.

Pickering is unique in providing holistic, empathic support from people who really understand, as they have had their own journeys. I am delighted to join the team and hope that we can grow and reach out to as many people as possible, wherever they, or their loved one, are on their cancer journey."

In her spare time Helen is enjoying the freedom retirement is giving her to try and improve her not very good golf handicap, travel and catch up with family and friends.
