A group of Truro Lions and partners visited Truro Cathedral on Tuesday 26 May and enjoyed a fascinating and educational tour of the cathedral roof. The tour involved climbing a spiral staircase of some 109 steps ( no mean feat for many) before a walk along the void above the ceiling and beneath the slate roof.

The weather was extremely hot and the heat from the sun was felt by all. Stunning views down to the vestry were experienced and even a short look outside across parts of the city was possible.

Huge thanks to Lion Simon Clitherow who along with Social Director Bill Rudd organised the trip and hosted us. Simon is one of the cathedral tour guides as well as being a Lion, and was supported by his colleague Colin to emnsure all remained safe and accounted for!

Our party consisted of Lion President Julian Collinson with Joy, Lion Bill Rudd and Mary, Lions Lew Lewis, Liz Randall, Anna Stenning, Liz Barnes, Richard Moore, and Jeff Slee. Also attending was Elaine Cardew.

A party of four Truro Lions with their partners attended the 51st Annual Charter Dinner of Camborne-Redruth Lions. The evening was hosted by Tehidy Park Golf Club and guests enjoyed a very substantial and delicious meal, and entertaining speeches.

It is always good to attend such events and show our support to the local Lions clubs, and their Presidents.

Lions attending were Lion President Julian Collinson, and Joy, Lion Alan Downie and Lesley, Lion Bill Rudd and Mary, and Lion Richard Moore with Beryl as per first three photos courtesy of Lion Alan and Lesley Downie.

A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support the Truro Lions collection for “Cornwall and Devon sending love to Ukraine” appeal.

We received some incredibly generous donations last Saturday the 23rd of May . Tesco Truro kindly donated 3 bags full of toiletries and personal items.

At the Tresemple Farm collection point, we were grateful to welcome a family who arrived with a wonderful donation of medicines and even a wheelchair in excellent condition.

Also delivered was an amazing collection of other donations, including 45 trauma teddy bears, plus other gifts from the church at Kenwyn and Kenwyn Community Association, together with generous contributions from the public and Lions supporters in Truro and Falmouth.

All these items are now on their way to the distribution point for onward transmission to Ukraine.

Thank you again to every single person who has donated, helped organise collections, or spread the word. Your kindness truly makes a difference. 🇺🇦

The next Collection at Tresemple is scheduled for Saturday the 27th of June

Lions Present at Tresemple Farm were Liz and Tony Randall, Keith Wellington.

On Friday 8 May, Truro Lions entered two teams of four in the annual Motor Neurone Charity golf day at St Austell golf club. A fine day with a good number of entrants lead to an enjoyable time for all.

The standard of golf from your Lions teams varied, with some spectacularly good holes offset but some less than good, but that’s golf!

The sun shone and we helped towards the MNDA charity raising funds towards their all-important work.

The photo below shows both Lions teams on the first tee before their respective rounds. From left to right:

On Sunday 20 May, four Truro Lions assisted with marshalling at the Cancer Research UK Race for Life, held along the seafront at Falmouth in glorious spring weather.

Around 500 runners participated and we understand approx £27,000 is expected to have been raised which is a huge achievement. The runners were challenged by a stiff breeze and very warm sunshine, but there were lots of smiles as they participated in either the 5k or 10k routes.

On Saturday 2 May, Truro Lions were present once again at Tesco, Truro, this time collecting for funds towards a new medical kit for Ukraine.

A fantastic amount of £168.06 was donated on the day, which provided virtually the whole cost of a medical kit and will allow us to purchase a kit and send on to Ukraine via Cornwall and Devon sending love to Ukraine.

Truro Lions are so grateful for the generosity of Tesco’s customers, and of course we are grateful, as always, to Tesco Truro for allowing us to collect for this very worthy cause in their store.

Pictured is Lion Peter Read, who is mainly responsible for our Ukraine appeals, and Lion President Julian Collinson. Lions Sue Gibbs, Anna Stenning, and Simon Clitherow were also in attendance during the day.

On behalf of Lion Peter Read and his wife Brenda together with their Photo.

Yesterday afternoon Brenda and I delivered the third Ukraine collection from Truro Lions, which again filled our car, to the Send Love to Ukraine hub in Callington. We were warmly welcomed by Sandra and Angela, 2 volunteers who were especially delighted with the large amount of knitted Trauma Teddies we had brought with us. After circulating the teddy pattern we had a great response. Keith, Elaine and Angela please give a big thank you to both the Kenwyn Church and the Perranwell knitting groups for their tremendous effort. Together with teddies knitted by friends and the two groups mentioned, we had over 50 teddies, which will soon be on their way to Ukraine.

Truro Lions Club recently concluded their Easter Egg/Hamper draw where draw tickets were sold at Tinners Court, and at many pubs across the city.

The Royal Oak at Perranwell Station really took up the challenge and raised a superb £504 through the support of landlord Jonathan, the staff, and customers. Truro Lions raised over £2,000 for AgeUK(Cornwall&IOS), Cornwall Hospice, and other local good causes, which included bucket collections at Tesco in Truro and Asda in Penryn, which makes the contribution from The Royal Oak even more noteworthy.

A group of Lions members and their partners were pleased to visit the pub on Wednesday 29 April to personally thank landlord Jonathan. Lion President Julian Collinson was delighted to hand over a certificate to Jonathan in recognition of the kindness and generosity of the pub customers and staff.

On Tuesday 28 April a group of Truro Lions were on a litter pick, in support of Lions International Week of Service (which focused on the environment), collecting rubbish from along the river between Malpas village and the top of Malpas Road. A good amount of rubbish was picked up, including two shopping trollies, a bike, and two traffic cones, all rescued from the banks of the river.

Under the supervision of Sunny Corner Conservation Volunteer, and Truro’s own, Paul Caruana, the group of Truro Lions were armed with litter pickers and bags, and organised by Lion Peter Read who despatched them up and down the riverside along the length of Malpas Road. The group reconvened at Sunny Corner to enjoy a well earned coffee and doughnut with grateful thanks to the Sunny Corner Volunteers.

Truro Lions are proud to make a wide number of contributions to the local community, ranging from litter picks, like this one, through to fund raising for local good causes, and many social events too. Anyone interested in joining us please message us.

The group photo shows Paul Caruana with the Lions at the end of their shift. Lions attending were Bill and Mary Rudd, Richard Moore, Peter Read, Lew Lewis, Simon Clitherow, Tony Randall and Julian Collinson.

The second photo shows Lion President Julian Collinson with Lions Simon Clitherow and Lew Lewis alongside the various items recovered from the riverbank!
