High temperatures and south-easterly winds this week have been bearing migrants to our shores. You may have noticed an abundance of Painted Lady and Silver Y while out and about, and perhaps a Humming-bird Hawk-moth or two. There have also been more unusual sightings of Clouded Yellow (normally a late-summer species) and Striped Hawk-moth in the county. Whatever you spot, don't forget to record!

Look out for this stunning beetle in ancient woodland in Mid and East Cornwall - and let Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust know if you think you've seen one. Don't forget to take a photo!

Brightening up with the relaunch of our Blue Ground Beetle (Carabus intricatus) Citizen Science survey!

Blue Ground Beetles are very rare and are currently only known from 15 sites in the UK; in Cornwall, Devon and South Wales.

🪲 Have you ever seen what you think might be a Blue Ground Beetle whilst out walking? If you have a photo of it, no matter how long ago it was taken, we’d love it if you could share it with us!

❗We are particularly interested in receiving more sightings and records from Cornwall.

ℹ️ Good to know: The Blue Ground Beetle is a distinctive species but can be easily confused with other species of both ground beetle and oil beetles, make sure you check out our hand ID guide on our web page

👨‍🔬 Join this fantastic Citizen Science survey and, who knows, you might help us discover new populations across Cornwall, Devon, Wales or even elsewhere!

🐝 Surveys undertaken by Buglife and the National Trust - Godrevy to St Agnes at Godrevy Farm, near Gwithian have led to the exciting discovery of the nationally scarce Red Bartsia Bee at the site.

The BTO are looking for volunteers to survey wild swans on the River Camel. Can you help?

Can you help us count Bewick's and Whooper Swans for the International Swan Census on 17-18 January 2026? 🦢 Visit the vacant site map to request a site ➡️ https://app.bto.org/gsmp/public/vacant-isc.jsp

Why is this survey important?
The census estimates the size and distribution of Whooper and Bewick’s Swan populations in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It is carried out every six years (formerly every five years), and also helps identify important wintering sites for these birds.

Discover more about the survey at www.bto.org/gsmp-isc
