First butterfly of the year on the garden today!

It was definitely a day for mowing the lawn and tidying up the edges as it’s been warm and wet.

I was just in the process of sweeping down and had decided not to mow the lower lawn (it’s under the chicken coup) only to see the flutter of wings out of the corner of my eye. I very beautiful Speckled Wood ❤️

Point to note: speckled woods love grasses by woodland as well being canopy dwellers living of honey dew, so if out walking or in my case mowing, bare these early pollinators some consideration 🙏🏻

Keep your eyes peeled this winter for the sunny but prickly common gorse (Ulex europaeus).

Gorse, also known as furze, is a native evergreen shrub found across the UK. Its yellow flowers appear from January to June, giving a slight coconut-like scent to the air.

As the saying goes: 'when gorse is out of bloom, kissing is out of fashion'. In other words, this long-flowering plant is always blooming somewhere!

Gorse flowers provide nectar for bees and butterflies, and its long, spiky leaves provide dense shelter and protection for birds and other wildlife all year round.

Gorse has had many uses in Britain and Ireland, including as a fast-burning fuel, as fodder for animals, and in traditional herbal medicines. The flowers can be used to make teas, syrups, vinegars and wines.

The future of the construction industry is WILD!

The UK has lost 7.5 million acres of wildflower meadow and flower-rich grassland since the 1930s according to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew. And in my experience, the UK may have a lot of farmland and hedgerows, but I’ve very rarely happened upon a wildflower meadow by chance.

Axford & Heaton champions the reintroduction of indigenous wildflowers through construction and development projects. We collaborate with local authorities to integrate wildflower meadows into our global movement, shaping a wilder future for construction.

There are many types of wildflowers in Cornwall, including hundreds of varieties that can be found along the Cornish coast, we also help introduce others whilst completing our sustainability mission.

At a recent in the digital workspace event it was great that the importance of nature and our connection to it was the highlight.

🐝 Listening to Tim Smit (Co-founder of the Eden project) and being able to impart how work and philosophy can combine the re-generation of of wildflower habitats, 🌿indigenous woodland, bio-diverse eco systems and well~being through construction sites, 👷🏻‍♂️integrated best building & architectural practices, was indeed an honour.

3% of meadowland back in 3yrs this amounts to 225,000 acres
