On World Humanitarian Day, remember those who are delivering life-saving aid as well as defending human rights: every person deserves safety, dignity and hope and humanitarian workers must never be targets.

Kernow Soroptimists were pleased to work in partnership with Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C) this week, for a pasty making workshop, delivered in Redruth. Seven members of the club spent a morning demonstrating how to make pasties with a group of children and adults brought together by CN4C. This organisation works to bring communities together to do the things that matter most, providing people with opportunities to live their best life, become better off and to make better sense of the system. It was clear that the group enjoyed their morning making pasties and especially enjoyed eating them at lunchtime! Thanks to everyone who supported this venture, including Etherington's Meats and Asda, who provided ingredients.

Jill and Wendy were delighted to join the Food for Thought – A Taste of Mexico event organised by the
One of a series of such events.

Hosted by Georgina González (A well-travelled Mexican by birth - who has lived in Cornwall for 5 years), the session brought women together to share stories, enjoy authentic Mexican food, and celebrate the importance of community and also female wellbeing.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with local women and strengthen community partnerships.

Georgina created authentic ( as much as is possible here in Cornwall!) providing hints and tips along the way, after which we all got to taste all the dishes.

Thank you to Georgina and also Lilyan from IWN for such an informative, welcoming and tasty event! We came away with lots of ideas and a renewed passion for Mexican food.

This month's Orange Cafe was an online celebration of the UN Day of International Friendship which is actually in 5 days time! Kernow Soroptimists and friends from across the UK and the world, came together to celebrate something that sits at the heart of soroptimist international values - Friendship. This UN day recognises that peace begins with relationships. Every friendship we build has the potential to make our world a little kinder. We spent some time remembering 'lost' friends and those that have died through violence. We then had some fun, finding ways to say hello across the world and playing friendship bingo. (Well done ) We finished by considering small acts of friendship and making a joint friendship pledge. Thanks to everyone who came.

This year, as the world faces profound ruptures — between nations, within societies, even within families — the call to friendship is not sentimental. It’s essential. It’s about reaching across what breaks us and daring to believe in something better. It is a call to imagine a future where difference doesn’t mean distance, where trust is stronger than fear. Through friendship, we don’t just cope with the world as it is — we begin to shape the world as it could be.

Members of Kernow Soroptimists were proud to take part in the Male Ally Network event at the Royal Cornwall Showground. We enjoyed the workshop delivered by MAN Culture, which showcased the type of materials that will be available to organisations that sign up to this Cornwall - wide initiative. We liked the 'where do you draw the line' pyramid (Pictured) which led to some interesting discussions. We look forward to being an active part of the Male Ally Network.

This morning, members of Kernow Soroptimists are attending the soft launch of the Male Ally Network at the Royal Cornwall Showground. This new Cornwall-wide initiative is bringing together men and women, organisations and communities from all sectors to help prevent violence against women and girls to create safety communities for everyone. The event was opened by Geraint Richards, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Ambassador and former High Sheriff of Cornwall. Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police then spoke about the horrendous statistics in the county and that this initiative was about everyday actions that could make a difference.

On 16th July, Jill and Wendy attended SI Brixham's annual inter-club event, spending a lovely afternoon listening to Alexis Bowater OBE, followed by a wonderful afternoon tea in the company of SI Brixham, SI Plymouth and Associate member, Daphne Dowsing.
During her inspiring talk, Alexis highlighted the prevalence of stalking, noting that around one in five women will experience stalking during their lifetime.
Alexis also raised the significance of the Istanbul Convention, describing it as one of the most important international agreements aimed at preventing violence against women, reminding us that: 1 in 4 women experience domestic abuse and on average, two women a week are killed by a current or former partner in the UK.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted and intensified many of these issues, increasing the urgency of tackling violence against women and girls. Following the pandemic, Alexis founded the West Country Women Awards to shine a light on the remarkable achievements of women across the region.
The awards were launched in 2022 with the aim of celebrating women whose contributions often go unnoticed. Rather than focusing solely on business success, the awards recognise women making a difference in every area of society. The awards have grown significantly - expanding to 24 categories this year.

Alexis explained that anyone can nominate someone deserving of recognition... and that the awards are intended not only to celebrate achievement but also to inspire women, encourage new role models and create stronger networks across the West Country.
Alexis’ talk combined a powerful reminder of the achievements of the women's movement in all its guises, with a sobering look at the continuing challenges facing women today. Her message was ultimately one of hope: by recognising and celebrating women, supporting one another through strong networks, and continuing to campaign against violence and inequality, every individual has the opportunity to help create lasting change.
