Women and girls are often among those most affected by environmental challenges, yet they are also at the forefront of creating solutions. From protecting natural resources and leading community projects to driving innovation and advocating for a sustainable future, women play a vital role in caring for our planet - and Soroptimists are supporting them to do so.

Kernow Soroptimists are saddened to announce the loss of Soroptimist Elizabeth Shirley Polmounter, who passed in May 2026. Shirley, a founding club member, was well known in the local St Austell community, for her proactive approach as a local Councillor and more recently as Chair of the Patient Partnership Group. She supported a wide range of charities and so many different organisations. But her heart was always with mother and children units in and around the local St Austell area. She helped many people over the years with funding or help with getting housing and raising money/ grants. She worked tirelessly and gave her all. In her later years, she concentrated on health and wellbeing especially of children. Despite her lack of mobility across the last year, Shirley was able to play an important role in club life, attending meetings online and sharing her wealth of experience with us all. She will be greatly missed. It was a privilege having her in the team! Love to her family at this time.

Soroptimist Susan from SI Bingley met up with Soroptimist Jennie from SI Kernow at the Eden Project this week. One of the great things about being a soroptimist sister is that you can find friends wherever you go. It was a real pleasure to introduce Susan and her husband Neal to this very special attraction in St Austell Cornwall. Susan and Jennie first met at the Convention on the Status of Women 68 in New York when they were both in the SIGBI (Great Britain & Ireland) delegation representing the clubs of the federation. Soroptimism provides so many opportunities to travel.

Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day and is themed "Together for a " ... a reminder that periods should never be a barrier to education, dignity, health or opportunity.

Around the world, millions of women and girls still face period poverty, stigma and lack of access to safe hygiene products and facilities. Too many miss school, work or everyday activities simply because menstruation remains surrounded by silence and inequality.

At we believe menstrual health is not a “women’s issue” - it’s an equality issue. By raising awareness, challenging stigmas and supporting practical action, we can help create a world where every woman and girl can manage her period safely, hygienically, confidently and without shame. Menstrual Hygiene is a Human Right.
