ShelterBox

ShelterBox We believe in a world where no one is without shelter after disaster. Every day they are faced with a battle for survival. Equality is our goal.

Every year thousands of communities, often with no warning, lose their homes, their possessions and their livelihoods. We provide emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. Since we began in 2000, we have responded to earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, typhoons and conflict, delivering

emergency humanitarian aid to communities in need. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the Syria crisis, and the biggest storm to ever make landfall – Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines; we have responded to some of the largest humanitarian crises the modern world has ever known. Alongside this, we have also helped many thousands of people displaced by disasters that are not featured in the media. Simply put, if there are families in need of emergency shelter, we will do everything we can to help them. Our vision
A world in which all people displaced by disasters and humanitarian crises are rapidly provided with emergency shelter and vital aid, which will help rebuild their communities and lives. Our mission
To rapidly provide emergency shelter and vital aid to stabilise, protect and support communities overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. ShelterBox social media house rules:
People are at the heart of everything we do. We have created our social media channels to connect with like-minded people who share our passion for supporting families around the world after disaster. We love hearing opinions and ideas and welcome different perspectives. We recognise the inequalities suffered in the communities we live in and work with. We are not all equal, particularly in the face of disasters, and we work to understand the vulnerabilities faced by certain groups so that we can best support the people who need it most. In order to reach it we need to stand in solidarity with groups facing oppression anywhere in the world, educate ourselves and strive to learn more. We will enforce our house rules to make sure our social media pages are safe places for everyone. We will delete and/or report comments that we consider inappropriate or disrespectful, including:

-Offensive comments against a culture, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender
-Abusive language including swearing, anger, hate, violence, obscenity, harassment, inflammatory comments or any comments that are racist, homophobic or sexist.
-Offensive or inappropriate usernames.
-Derogatory or threatening comments about our staff, volunteers and the people we feature.
-Personal information like names, addresses, email or phone numbers
-Off topic remarks not relevant to the conversation.
-Advertising or marketing posts

📍 Mozambique project update

Between December 2025 and March 2026, one of the most destructive rainy seasons in decades affected more than 700,000 people. Flooding worsened when Cyclone Gezani struck in February.

The impact has been catastrophic. At the peak, nearly 400,000 people were forced to leave their homes.

Many families were forced to shelter in schools, churches and makeshift sites, which are often overcrowded and unsafe. Now, as floodwaters recede, people are returning to find their homes gone and farmland still underwater and their homes and livelihoods gone.

Since January, we’ve been responding alongside local partners, Livaningo and Rotary International. Recent assessments in the worst-hit areas show shelter is one of the most urgent needs.

Many homes, built from reeds and mud, have been severely damaged and cannot withstand even normal weather, let alone storms.

Working directly with communities, we’re supporting families to repair and strengthen their homes using local materials and skills. Building on local knowledge means homes can be rebuilt safer, stronger and more sustainably.

The need is urgent. More than 470,000 people are still without a safe place to call home - your support can make a difference.

A devastating fire in Dhaka has destroyed over 600 homes in the Kalshi informal settlement - leaving thousands of people without shelter.

With buildings packed closely together, the fire spread rapidly. Many families lost everything - their homes, belongings, and sources of income - in a matter of hours. An estimated 6,000 to 20,000 people have been affected.

Now, people are sleeping in open spaces, under bridges, and beside roads, exposed to extreme heat and unsafe conditions. Shelter is the most urgent need.

Together with our partner Uttaran- A Social Development Organization, we are one of the only humanitarian teams currently supporting affected families. We’ll be providing emergency shelter materials, essential items, and cash assistance to families with nowhere to live.

Did you know many humanitarians hide their identity just to keep working?

🌈 This Pride Month, we’re sharing our perspective on the challenges of delivering humanitarian aid around the world - especially in places where being LGBTQI+ can put people, including our own teams, at risk.

In many countries where we work, people simply being themselves is met with persecution and violence. This means our teams must carefully navigate these barriers to ensure everyone, regardless of identity, receives the shelter and support they need after disaster.

Safety, inclusion, and equal access are at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with local partners to protect both our teams and the communities we serve.

There’s still a long way to go, but by acknowledging these challenges, we can help break down barriers that shouldn’t exist.

📍 Ethiopia Project Update

The humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia is severe - yet it remains largely overlooked. Millions of people - the equivalent of nearly a third of the UK population - have been driven from their homes by violence and persecution. Many are now forced to survive in overcrowded temporary shelters, with little safety, privacy, or access to basic essentials.

Since 2019, we have supported nearly 14,000 families to begin rebuilding their lives. Now, our newest project is underway.

Working alongside our local partner PAD and the communities themselves, we are helping to create safer, more dignified living conditions - especially for women and girls. This includes building women-only communal spaces designed to support essential daily activities in safety and privacy, including the management of menstrual hygiene.

In response to overcrowded conditions, we are also improving fire safety in high-risk areas and providing training to strengthen local support systems and emergency response.

During our most recent visit, we worked closely with our partner, listening to the community and visiting camps to better understand how we can shape our support to meet their needs.

Thank you for your ongoing support in making this possible. Keep following for more updates.

🐾 Luna and Tom have crossed the finish line!

After 300 miles along the Cornwall coastline, 2‑year‑old Labrador Luna and her human, Tom, have completed their incredible challenge to raise awareness of our work.

The walk took 2 weeks, and Luna’s top highlights included meeting so many friendly people along the way, sunset snuggles in the tent, crystal-clear swims, and, of course, plenty of bites of pasties!

Luna and Tom, we can’t thank you enough. Our work simply wouldn’t be possible without people like you shining a light on it.

Check out their pawsome adventure and show your support 💚👉 https://bit.ly/42N3ZWE
