Joe Day walked through Livewire Youth Music ’s doors at 14 - now he’s a Level 6 Youth Work Apprentice at Plymouth Marjon University helping young people in Saltash in Cornwall to thrive, while assuring the charity’s legacy.
Joe reflects on his journey:
“When I started going to Livewire, I was looking for purpose and clarity to improve my mental health… I’m quite proud of the person I am, and I wouldn’t be that person without everything Livewire gave me.”
For Founder Andy Rance, the apprenticeship is the perfect way to put the charity’s future in trustworthy hands:
“Joe’s been through the process, he understands the music space, and he knows what support looks like. He’s the perfect person to continue the work we’ve done.”
The apprenticeship allows Joe to apply learning in real time while being mentored by Andy, and ensures Livewire continues delivering the support local young people need.
“It’s not just about me,” Andy says, “It’s about Joe, the future and the young people who come through our doors.”
Investing in apprenticeships is more than staff development - it’s succession planning, sustainability and giving opportunity to the next generation.
