A new report, released today, reveals the devastating impact bycatch is having on marine wildlife in our seas.

Bycatch is the accidental capture of non-target animals during fishing operations, and the numbers are deeply concerning.

Every year, across the UK bycatch impacts:
🐦 Over 10,000 seabirds
🐬 More than 1,000 whales and dolphins
🦭 Around 500 seals
🦈 Over 120 tonnes of protected sharks, skates and rays
🐟 More than 1,000 endangered Atlantic salmon (in the North East mackerel fishery alone)

Fishers don't want high levels of bycatch and find it distressing. Many are working to reduce it but are inadequately supported by the UK Government. Our wildlife and fishing industry deserve better.

Ministers must act urgently by providing better support for fishers, stronger protections, mandatory monitoring, and legally binding Bycatch Action Plans before more wildlife is lost.

Read the full report by searching ENDING BYCATCH on our website.

How much do we really know about our ocean?

From regulating our climate and supporting incredible wildlife to sustaining livelihoods and providing the oxygen we breathe, we're more reliant than we'll ever know.

But right now, too much is going wrong beneath the surface. We need proper protection to help bring our seas back to life.

Search SAVE OUR SEAS on our website to find out more.

Crabbing - a huge part of many Cornish childhoods - has been making headlines recently.
To enjoy this seaside favourite whilst protecting the welfare of the animals, here are some guidelines to follow. 🦀💚

Refresh sea water regularly
Only use a net bag for bait (no hooks are needed on crab lines)
No more than three crabs per bucket
Keep crabs in the shade
Remove crabs if they are fighting
Carefully put crabs back in the water

For a more in-depth perspective, including how to hold a crab, read our Marine Conservation Officer Matt Slater's blog. Link in comments

I came for the wildlife, I stayed for me.

This week is volunteers' week and a chance to hear from just a few of our dedicated volunteers.

Hundreds of people volunteer with us across Cornwall, for all kinds of different reasons. You don't need experience or specialist knowledge, and there's roles for all different levels of commitment.

You can volunteer in the office, on sand dunes, on the moors, in a temperate rainforest, even under the sea!

Whatever your background, whatever your time, whatever draws you to nature - there's a place for you in our volunteer community.

Search 'volunteering' on our website to see the latest ways you can join us, because doing changes things.

There's a silent crisis under the waves.

Despite the ongoing efforts of Cornish fishers to reduce bycatch, thousands of dolphins, seals, sharks, and seabirds are accidentally caught in fishing nets and gear every year across the UK.

This isn't about lack of care! For those in the fishing industry, this is a distressing and unwanted part of an already difficult job.

But for our seas, this is an emergency. Progress by the UK Government on the issue has been too slow, and unnecessary deaths remain too high.

We’re joining with others to call for Government action. A new report by Wildlife and Countryside Link is set to reveal the true scale of bycatch in UK waters and we need your MP to attend a launch event and learn more.

If they don't understand the problem - they won't tackle it.

Head to our website and search CRISIS to learn more and for a link to email your MP, or comment CRISIS below and we'll send you the link.
