Camino Pilgrimage Inspires Porthleven WI Members
Start
Members of Porthleven WI enjoyed an inspiring presentation at their June monthly meeting when fellow member Sharon shared the story of her remarkable pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
In September 2025, Sharon set off on a largely solo journey, walking an incredible 465 miles (800 km) over four and a half weeks. Covering between 10 and 18 miles each day, she carried everything she needed in a 6½ kg backpack and relied on her walking poles as she travelled through picturesque villages, mountain passes and open countryside on her way to Santiago de Compostela.
Sharon explained the importance of the pilgrim passport, or credencial, which is stamped at churches, cafés and accommodation along the route. Upon reaching Santiago, pilgrims present their completed passport at the Pilgrim’s Office and receive the Compostela Certificate, a lasting reminder of their achievement.
The Camino is about much more than walking. Sharon spoke about the friendships she made along the way, the camaraderie among pilgrims from around the world and the traditions that make the journey so special. One tradition is carrying a small pebble from home, symbolising a burden, hope or memory that pilgrims choose to leave behind during their pilgrimage.
Through stunning photographs of mountain landscapes, ancient pathways, historic towns and the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Sharon brought her journey to life for members.
Her fascinating talk was enjoyed by all and members thanked Sharon for sharing the challenges, adventures and rewards of this unforgettable experience.
