Ten years on, Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common than that which divides us continues to inspire the women of the WI.

This month, the Jo Cox Foundation is marking Jo’s life, work and legacy with a fortnight of reflection, connection and action. Up and down the country WI members work every day to bring people together, to learn about and understand each other and to work together to improve our communities.

The WI is proud to support this important moment - and to continue to play our part in working together to build a more respectful, less lonely and better connected society.

Carbis Baybes WI Enjoys a Fragrant Day at the Cornish Lavender Farm

Members of Carbis Baybes WI enjoyed a wonderful outing to the Cornish Lavender Farm in Perranporth, where they were treated to a fascinating and informative talk from farm owner Tina. She shared the story of the farm, explained how lavender is grown and harvested, and revealed some of the many uses for this beautifully scented plant.

After the talk, members had the chance to wander through the stunning lavender fields, taking in the glorious purple displays and the wonderful fragrance that filled the air. It was the perfect opportunity for photographs, chatting with friends, and enjoying the peaceful surroundings in the June sunshine.

The afternoon continued with a delicious lavender cream tea. The homemade treats were a real hit, and everyone agreed that the lavender-infused goodies added a unique and tasty twist to a traditional favourite.

To round off the visit, members got creative and made their own lavender wands to take home. There was plenty of laughter as they mastered the technique with varying degrees of success, and everyone left with a lovely handmade keepsake and a beautifully scented reminder of a fantastic day out.

🌸 Thank You, Tracy 🌸

At our June meeting, we said a fond farewell to Tracy as she retired from her role as Porthleven W.I. Treasurer and stepped down from the committee after many years of dedicated service.

Tracy has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, keeping our finances in order and making sure every penny was accounted for - no easy task with a W.I. that enjoys tea, cake, and plenty of activities!

We are incredibly grateful for her hard work, commitment, and friendship over the years. Thankfully, Tracy isn’t leaving us completely and remains a very active member of our W.I.

Thank you, Tracy, for everything you’ve done. Enjoy your retirement from spreadsheets, receipts, and balancing the books - you’ve certainly earned it.

Congratulations to Wendy Harris – Our New WI Climate Ambassador

We are delighted to announce that Wendy Harris has become a WI Climate Ambassador. This important voluntary role supports the Women’s Institute’s commitment to raising awareness of climate change and encouraging positive environmental action within our communities.

As a Climate Ambassador, Wendy will help promote climate-related campaigns, share information and resources, and encourage others to become involved in protecting and improving our environment. Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing our world today, and the work of Climate Ambassadors is vital in helping communities understand the issues and take practical steps towards a more sustainable future.

We know Wendy will bring enthusiasm, dedication and a wealth of experience to this role, and we wish her every success as she embarks on this new and important journey. We look forward to hearing about the projects, campaigns and initiatives she becomes involved with and the positive impact she will make both locally and within the wider WI network.

Camino Pilgrimage Inspires Porthleven WI Members

Start

Members of Porthleven WI enjoyed an inspiring presentation at their June monthly meeting when fellow member Sharon shared the story of her remarkable pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

In September 2025, Sharon set off on a largely solo journey, walking an incredible 465 miles (800 km) over four and a half weeks. Covering between 10 and 18 miles each day, she carried everything she needed in a 6½ kg backpack and relied on her walking poles as she travelled through picturesque villages, mountain passes and open countryside on her way to Santiago de Compostela.

Sharon explained the importance of the pilgrim passport, or credencial, which is stamped at churches, cafés and accommodation along the route. Upon reaching Santiago, pilgrims present their completed passport at the Pilgrim’s Office and receive the Compostela Certificate, a lasting reminder of their achievement.

The Camino is about much more than walking. Sharon spoke about the friendships she made along the way, the camaraderie among pilgrims from around the world and the traditions that make the journey so special. One tradition is carrying a small pebble from home, symbolising a burden, hope or memory that pilgrims choose to leave behind during their pilgrimage.

Through stunning photographs of mountain landscapes, ancient pathways, historic towns and the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Sharon brought her journey to life for members.

Her fascinating talk was enjoyed by all and members thanked Sharon for sharing the challenges, adventures and rewards of this unforgettable experience.

Over 40,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals in the UK each year, and defibrillators can significantly increase the chance of survival, but only if they’re working.

This week is Check Your Defib Week, and we’re encouraging all defib Guardians to ensure their device is working and accurately listed on The Circuit. It could help save lives.

Not a defib Guardian? You can still take part in Check Your Defib Week by downloading our Defibrillator (AED) guide. It's full of practical information to help you raise awareness on the importance of defibrillators (AEDs) and includes clear, accessible guidance on AEDs and offers many ways for WI members to get involved to make a lifesaving difference.

You can find it here: https://mywi.thewi.org.uk/public-affairs-and-campaigns/news-and-actions/new-bystanders-can-be-lifesavers-defibrillator-aed-resource-guide

At this month’s Trematon WI meeting we’re talking all things wedding dresses — the elegant, the unusual, and the ones held together by sheer willpower and safety pins.

If you’ve still got your dress, have a story, a memory, or a photo you’re brave enough to share, bring it along. We promise laughter, bridal nostalgia, and absolutely no judging.

See you there in your finest outfits!
