In Loving Memory of Moonshine
Some souls are so extraordinary that they leave paw prints, footprints... and wingbeats on thousands of hearts.
Moonshine was one of those souls.
For 26 incredible years by my side, and living to the remarkable age of 28, Moonshine wasn't simply an owl, she was a teacher, a healer, an ambassador and my closest companion. Together we travelled across England and Wales, meeting thousands of people, inspiring awe, comforting those who needed it most, and helping others discover a love and respect for owls and the natural world.
Many of you met her at events, festivals, schools and demonstrations. Some of you had your photograph taken with her. Others simply stood quietly in her presence, feeling the calm wisdom she carried. She even became a TV star and inspired a piece of music written especially for her.
As she grew older, she embraced a gentler pace of life. I wore a special glove to support her ageing feet, preferred peaceful days, and found joy in watching the next generation, especially young Barty, begin his own journey as an ambassador.
On Thursday 2nd July, at 7:30 pm, with her head resting against me, Moonshine quietly slipped into the Spirit World. She fell asleep in my arms for the very last time.
There are no words that can truly describe the loss.
But Moonshine's story does not end here.
The Moonshine Sanctuary Fund
In Moonshine's memory, Ravenswell is creating a dedicated fund to build The Moonshine Home, a specialist rehabilitation and permanent care aviary for sick, injured, elderly, unwanted and disabled owls.
Not every owl can be released back into the wild.
Some need weeks or months of rehabilitation.
Some need lifelong specialist care.
Some simply need a safe place where they are loved, respected and allowed to live with dignity.
Moonshine spent her life helping people.
Now, through her legacy, she can help owls who need us the most.
Every donation marked "Moonshine" will be placed into a dedicated savings fund used exclusively to create this special sanctuary. Every pound brings us one step closer to giving vulnerable owls the peaceful home they deserve.
