Who says learning a language has to be stressful? On the Roseland, we do things a little differently! 😉

Reflecting on our first six months of Cornish lessons, here’s how we roll:

✅ Cheating is actively encouraged! (We're all in it together).

📚 Homework is completely optional.

💬 WhatsApp chats are for "chat," and absolutely NOT corrected.

☕ Tea and biscuits are mandatory (if you ask in Cornish, of course!).

From playing number and word games to successfully discussing the notoriously unpredictable Cornish weather, our weekly sessions are packed with laughs, good company, and zero pressure.

Ready to join the fun? We’re restarting our beginner and continuer classes on Wednesday evenings from 9th September (starting with an all-comers Taster Session from 6–7pm). Come for the language, stay for the cuppa and the yarns! 🫖🍪

Did you know that learning Cornish (Kernewek) does more than just exercise your brain—it actually helps unlock the history hidden right beneath our feet? 🗺️✨

As local learners on the Roseland ("an Ros") have discovered over the past six months, place names come alive when you understand the language. Words tap directly into the core of Cornwall’s past life, ancient ways, and distinct landscape.

Want to try a few words right now?

Dydh da! – Hello! (literally "Good day!")

Fatla genes? – How are you?

Piw os ta? – Who are you?

Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to carry on your learning journey, our friendly Wednesday evening sessions are restarting in September! Come along, learn something new, and enjoy a cuppa and a chat. ☕

📅 Taster Session: Wednesday 9th September, 6:00pm – 7:00pm

📍 Where: Committee Room, Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, TR2 5EE

💷 Cost: £1.00 per session (just to cover room hire and refreshments)

Fancy an afternoon of stories, memories, and a good cuppa? Come along to Calstock Village Hall on 15th August, 1pm–4pm for our Maritime Memory Day! We’ll have historic photos, documents, friendly faces, and plenty of river tales. Bring your own photos or artefacts if you’d like — or just come for the chat and refreshments. A relaxed, enjoyable community afternoon for everyone.

Hedhlow an Mortidys ~ Tales of the Tides

Our Tales of the Tides project is a collaboration between the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies, Callington, Saltash, and Torpoint Old Cornwall Societies. It explores people and their connection with the Tamar. Throughout the year there will be walks, talks, memory days, workshops, mummers play, exhibition and much more. It is funded under the PSNM Blue Sparks initiative.

The Plymouth Sound National Marine Park Horizons project has been made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players with £11.6 million of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The story of the Prayer Book Rebellion reminds us that identity matters — and that communities are strongest when they stand together. As we gather to commemorate this chapter of Cornish history, we honour the courage and conviction of those who came before us. Their legacy continues in every effort to protect our heritage today.
