🐘🦅🦋Elephant Hawk-moth🦋🦅🐘

In September 2025, we found an elephant Hawk-moth caterpillar (so named for it's similar appearance to an elephants trunk) in our depot, Fozzard's Field Nursery. It was exposed to predators and away from a food source beside our shed, so we researched what it would want to eat 🌱

Upon discovering that the caterpillars like to eat fuchsias, our amazing nursery team that grow all the lovely plants around the city, offered to let the caterpillar overwinter in their fuchsia filled hanging baskets in the polytunnel. The caterpillar quickly disappeared in the plants and wasn't spotted again 🐛

Earlier this May, our nursery team found a chrysalis behind a heater in the polytunnel and called us over to ID it. Upon identifying it to be an elephant hawk-moth chrysalis, we felt there was a strong chance it was our caterpillar in it's next stage of life!

As work in the polytunnel was in full swing, we decided it wasn't the safest location and placed the chrysalis in a small vivarium where it was kept warm and moist. Just a week or so later, Fozzie appeared! 🦋

We brought Fozzie back to the nursery the next day to release them, after they had built up some strength, so they could fly away from where they were found 🦋

After some encouragement, Fozzie flew off in the polytunnel and then out into the wider world 🦋

Keep an eye out for these stunning creatures at dusk and maybe you'll be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one! 🐘🦅🦋

🌱Three-Cornered Leek Removal🌱

This season, we have been targeting the three-cornered Leek which is a fast spreading non-native plant 🌱

As it's name suggests, the stem of this plant is shaped like a prism and it smells like leek. You will often find in amongst out native wild garlic and bluebells, taking up their space and resources.

Today we had help from the Friends of Coosebean to tackle where three-cornered leek is entering Southern High Wood, and Truro in Bloom to tackle the odd spots in Glasteinan Woodland in Beechwood Parc 🌱🌱

With their fantastic help, we removed 24 bags from Southern High Wood and 11 bags from Glasteinan Woodland, add to this the 10 bags we removed from Daubuz Moor last month and that is a whopping 43 bags of three-cornered leek removed from our wild spaces! 🗑️

A huge thanks to all involved and everyone who helps us look after our wild spaces. Keep an eye out for three-cornered leek in your areas and if it's in your garden, make sure it doesn't escape into the wild!

Want to get involved in protecting our green spaces?

The Friends of Coosebean are coming together to help our woodland thrive — come along and join our friendly group of volunteers and get stuck in.

Making space for bluebells
We’ll be clearing away invasive three-cornered leek to give our native bluebells the space they need to bloom and flourish.

📅 Saturday 9th May
⏰ 10.30am – 12pm
📍 Meet at the top of Barton Meadow

🌱 Did you know? Three-cornered leek…
- Isn’t native to the UK — it originally comes from the Mediterranean
- Spreads incredibly quickly, forming dense carpets that crowd out native plants like bluebells
- Has a strong garlic/onion smell (you’ll definitely notice it once you start clearing!)
- Although edible, it’s a real problem for woodland biodiversity if left unmanaged

🌸🐦Daubuz Moor🐦🌸

Today our fantastic volunteers helped us out at Daubuz Moor with path maintenance, litter picking, and removing invasive species.

Our main plant we tackled today was Bear's Breeches 🐻, an invasive plant that can outcompete many of our native species.

We dug this one out and will keep a close eye for it shooting up from any little bits of root that may still be in the ground.

As always, we thank you for helping to look after our sites and hope you enjoy your visit 🌱🦡🌸

Have you ever seen a black fly with two long dangling legs in the spring? 🪰

You may have seen a St Mark's (or hawthorn) fly!

This slightly odd looking creature appears around St Mark's day on the 25th April and are very important spring pollinators.

They particularly enjoy the nectar of fruit and hawthorn trees, making our young community orchard on Treffry Road the perfect habitat for them 🌳🌸

Keep an eye out for a sizeable black fly with long legs when you're next out on our sites 🪰

🌸🐸Spring🐸🌸

Despite all the bad weather we have been having lately, spring still seems to be on its way 🌱

Life is popping up everywhere, and Daubuz Moor is no exception! 🌱

While the ground is completely saturated and not ideal for walking on by the river, this natural flood plain is doing its job and nature is appreciating it. In a large puddle, that for most of the year is called a path, multiple clumps of frogspawn can be seen at the edge of the grass and we are only at the start of February! 🐸

We hope to have young frogs hopping around in no time! So watch where you step in the puddles - you don't know who's home you might be disturbing! 🐸

🍃🪵🪾Storm Goretti🪾🪵🍃

Like many people, we have spent this week clearing up after the storm 🍃

While it's a natural part of life for trees to fall down, Storm Goretti has brought many down at once causing quite a few of our paths to be closed.

We are working our way through the sites and pathways, making them safe and opening areas up. But there are still quite a few to go 🪾

We thank you for your patience while we continue working to make the areas safe, for letting us know where trees had come down, and ask that you be mindful when out on our sites while we clear the trees 🪵🪵

Stay safe and enjoy your visits on our sites 🌳
