I shared this clip in a recent camera trap compilation, but I thought it was interesting enough to deserve a post of its own.
Captured at dawn before daylight had fully set in, a group of Canada geese had been alarm-calling from a field beside the river before this Eurasian otter appeared on camera. Then, without warning, it suddenly sprinted out of the water towards the geese before turning around and carrying on as if nothing had happened.
My guess is that it was looking for an opportunistic meal, but the geese were already well aware of its presence and any element of surprise had long gone.
What struck me most was just how quickly the otter accelerated. We often think of otters as graceful swimmers, but seeing one explode into a sprint like this was pretty impressive.
