THREE GOALS, THREE POINTS AND A STYLES-ISH RETIREMENT.

Tring II 3-0 Berkhamsted & HH V

Tring 2s rounded off their league season with a 3-0 win over neighbours Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead.

It was a game charged with some emotion for Tring as they bade farewell to long-standing servant Ian "Nobby" Styles who called time on a 57 year career with the club.

Styles put on a Man of the Match show, with a goal, an assist, and a scattering of deft touches.

Fielding a much changed team following 1st team call ups, Tring settled quickly, mindful of the threat from Berko's direct approach. The star of the show early on was James Collins, who was industry personified as he disrupted the visitors' midfield setup.

With Ian Ewers directing matters from central defence, Tring began to move the ball well. Collins' midfield partner Rob Boddington linked with all around him to set up a string of attacks.

A neat passing move led to Tring's opening goal with the ball being moved efficiently upfield and from side to side before setting up Ian Styles in the D, with an option to shoot at goal. Instead, he slipped the ball to Edward Brown who slotted home.

Berko earned some penalty corners, but their routine was misfiring on the day and bore no fruit, and a couple of good saves and determined defending kept the scoresheet clean.

Tring went two up when Ralph Darvill took advantage of a gap in the visitors defence and advanced into the D; eschewing a shot he instead passed to Nick Brown, who made a neat tip-in beyond the keeper.

Under the generalship of a poorly Chris Barnes Tring resolved at the break to keep things tight to hold on to their lead, and in the second half they very much did that.

Berkhamsted's best chance came from a scuffed defensive clearance which set up an overload on their right; a forward was able to enter the D unchallenged and unleashed a strong shot, but home keeper Rob Brown made a superb left-footed stop.

With fifteen minutes remaining it fell to Styles to put a fitting full stop to his career with a really well taken goal from the centre of the D, and the Blue & Whites played out the game in comfort.

It has to be said that the Berkhamsted keeper made a good 5 or 6 last ditch saves, which kept the scoreline far closer than it might have been. A sterling effort!

A lower mid table league finish really doesn't tell the true story of the team's season, as poor availability led to some games being conceded as walkovers. In reality the team was competitive in almost all games, and certainly in recent weeks they have demonstrated a certain defensive steeliness.

New members would be welcomed with open arms, and with a new pitch the Club hopes to rekindle interest in hockey at Tring School, and there will be chances for to try the game, or restart careers with some summer fixtures and training.

The Club already knows how the 26/27 will start as they put on a celebration day for Gilbert Grace, who will turn 90 in October.

OXFORD VII 3-0 TRING II

In the kind of weather that makes hockey players hanker after the game becoming a summer sport, Tring 2s played their last away game of the season, travelling to already promoted Oxford 7s.

A tough game was anticipated, but the team aimed to draw on the strength of their excellent win against Milton Keynes last time out to try and get something out of the game.

Oxford were on the front foot from the off, and led the Tring defence a merry dance with swift ball movement and individual skills. Only some determined goalkeeping from Man of the Match Rob Brown kept the scoresheet empty.

Despite dogged defence Tring went a goal down after ten minutes, and the lead was doubled when an Oxford midfielder advanced into the D to shoot home from 14 yards.

The third goal came, as quite a few have this season, when a speculative Tring attack broke down. With players over-committed, this allowed Oxford to break quickly and set up a far post tap in.

At half time Tring again resolved to defend in depth and to avoid diving into tackles.

With this determination, and with some more excellent keeping from Brown, the visitors frustrated the home side's desire to increase their goal difference, and ensured no further scores in the game.

Tring round up their league season when they welcome Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead to Mortimer Hill next Saturday.

TRING II 2-1 MILTON KEYNES "RONIN"

A fantastic spirited effort with only ten players saw Tring 2s grab the result of the season as they beat visitors Milton Keynes 2-1.

Tring were outclassed in the corresponding fixture in the city of the concrete cow, going down 6-1, so there were surely some of the ranks of the Blue and Whites who feared a similar outcome.

Setting out to keep a firm defensive shape Tring cast their lone forward, Nick Brown, up front to pick up whatever scraps the team could feed him.

The home side settled into shape really quickly, and it slowly became obvious that MK were struggling to find a way through.

Indeed, Tring had the best chances of the first 35 minutes, with Brown hitting the post twice to keep the visitors' defence on edge.

Frayed tempers crept in in the visitors' ranks proving just how deeply they were being affected by Tring's solid defence.

It was 0-0 at half time, and Tring were bullish about their chances of holding on for a draw.

Sustained pressure from MK in the opening minutes of the edcond half produced a string of penalty corners, but the excellent defensive running of skipper Ian Grainger, and some measured defending kept them at bay.

With fifteen minutes left a breakaway down the right forced a clumsy foul on Chris Barnes, and from the resultant PC Barnes popped up on a post to deflect in Rob Boddington's shot.

Ten minutes later, Nick Brown's lone efforts were rewarded as he outpaced the entire Milton Keynes defensive line to slot home an unlikely second goal.

The welter of PCs for the visitors eventually paid off as with a change of shooting angle the ball deflected past the excellent Rob Brown to make it 2-1.

Tring had three minutes to hold out, and they skillfully kept possession deep in the MK half to minimise the chances of conceding an equaliser.

The team was justifiably cock-a-hoop with the win, as it is fair to say Tring hasn't had the rub of the green all season with some results.

The Man of the Match was deemed to be a team effort, as picking one player out seemed divisive.

Tring II 0-0 Abingdon V

Tring 2s earned a point against second in the table Abingdon at Mortimer Hill.

The visitors arrived without a goalkeeper so Tring were presented with the potential to pressurised the D, and surely goals would result...?

Things went well for the first ¼ of an hour, with some good passing moves creating half chances for James Collins and Nick Brown.

Keeping them at bay was a very determined "goal-minder" whose excellent eye picked off several promising efforts to clear the danger. The Abingdon defence contracted around their 23 and D, to confound Tring's attacking efforts.

In defence, the home side was largely untroubled and keeper Rob Brown was almost a spectator for the entire half.

The second half went very much the same as the first, but ill luck befell Edward Brown as he made good moves at the top of the D but was confounded by the ball hitting his foot.

Several short corners came and went for Tring before they finally had the ball in the net - but umpire Kate Stokes had blown for a slight stick tackle on Chris Barnes in the build up, slight enough to enable Barnes to cross for Ian Styles who shot home at close range. The resulting PC went unconverted.

Time was eventually called with the deadlock unbroken, possibly the right outcome for what was a well contested 70 minutes.

THREE POINTS ON THE ROAD.

Wootton II 1-3 Tring II

Tring 2s returned to league action this weekend, making the longish trip to the outskirts of Northampton, to take on Wootton 2s, who were convincing 4-0 winners at Mortimer Hill back in September.

The Blue & Whites welcomed back midfield general Chris Barnes after a long injury lay off, and we're probably at their strongest for several games.

Tring were on the front foot from the off, and were possibly unlucky not to win a penalty stroke when Nick Brown was fouled in front of goal. The resultant penalty corner came to nought.

The viaiting side owed their first half clean sheet in large part to 'keeper Rob Brown who pulled a string of athletic saves to keep things at 0-0.

By and large Tring attacked too narrowly and without patience in the first half, but against a fairly strong opposition everyone was happy with the score at half time.

In the second half Tring were more adventurous with the ball, spreading play across a pitch in top playing condition after the rain. This approach seems to subdue the home side, who responded with a direct style which proved easily picked off by the Tring defence.

The more positive game plan paid off when Nick Brown showed great bravery and determination to slot the ball home under a brace of firm tackles.

Brown added the second goal ten minutes later and Tring could feel breathing space...dropping off in defence to easily mop up most of Wootton's threat.

The result was put beyond doubt when some neat interplay on the right set up Rob Boddington who finished with aplomb to make it 3-0.

The home side did secure some small consolation when a second, raised shot from a PC at the final play of the game was just too much for left post man Ralph Darvill to keep out.
