🌿 Invasive Species Week is back! | 22–28 June 2026 🌿
This annual campaign raises awareness of invasive non-native species and the simple actions we can all take to help protect our local environment. One of the most widespread invasive plants in our area is Himalayan Balsam, which can quickly dominate riverbanks, woodlands and pathways, crowding out native plants and reducing biodiversity.
As part of Invasive Species Week, Welcome to Our Woods is inviting the community to get involved in two local Big Balsam Bash events in Cwm Saerbren Woodland:

🌱 Tuesday 23 June | 10:00am–2:00pm
In collaboration with A River for all
πŸ“ Ty Pren Roundhouse, Treherbert

🌱 Thursday 25 June | 10:30am–12:30pm
In collaboration with Social Strollers and Snails Walking Group
πŸ“ Ty Pren Roundhouse, Treherbert

Both events are an opportunity to:
βœ” Help tackle Himalayan Balsam before it sets seed
βœ” Learn about invasive species and their impact on local habitats
βœ” Enjoy time outdoors in the woodlands
βœ” Meet like-minded people and make a positive difference in your community

No previous experience is needed. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing, sturdy footwear and gardening gloves if you have them.

β˜• Light refreshments will be available.

Together we can help protect our rivers, woodlands and wildlife for future generations.

🐌🌿 Join the Thursday Social Snails Big Balsam Bash! 🌿🐌
22–28 June is Invasive Species Week, and we're doing our bit to protect the beautiful Cwm Saerbren woodlands by tackling one of the UK's most invasive plants – Himalayan Balsam.
Join the Social Strollers and Snails Walking Group and Welcome to Our Woods for a friendly community conservation session, combining a gentle walk with hands-on action to help stop the spread of this invasive species before it sets seed.
Himalayan Balsam spreads rapidly along rivers, paths and woodland edges, crowding out native wildflowers and reducing biodiversity. By removing it now, we can help create more space for native plants, insects and wildlife to thrive.

Welcome to Our Woods is teaming up with A River for all to tackle one of the UK's most invasive plant species – Himalayan Balsam.

This fast-spreading non-native plant crowds out native wildflowers, damages habitats and reduces biodiversity along our rivers, woodlands and paths. By pulling it before it sets seed, we can help protect our local environment and keep our woodlands thriving.

πŸ“… Tuesday 23 June 2026
⏰ 10:00am – 2:00pm

(Behind Treherbert Train Station)

Whether you can stay for the whole session or just lend a hand for an hour, your support will make a real difference.

Please bring:
βœ”οΈ Sturdy footwear
βœ”οΈ Long sleeves and trousers
βœ”οΈ Gardening gloves (if you have them)
βœ”οΈ Waterproofs (just in case!)
βœ”οΈ Water, sun cream and a sense of adventure

This is a family-friendly volunteering opportunity and a great way to spend time outdoors, meet new people and help care for the local landscape.

Together, we can stop the spread and protect the beautiful Cwm Saerbren woodland and river corridor for future generations.

An educational day today with our volunteers and students learning rope techniques for tree work and climbing. And some more bird boxes being built ready for sales.

Pop along to an on track volunteering session at the old brewery site, across Treherbert train tracks every Tuesday 10am-3pm, make new friends, learn new skills, and be a "landscape steward" for your local area.
