Yesterday (Saturday) we attended the Annual Meeting of the Anglesey Federation of WIs.
Although there was a good turnout overall, with plenty of branches represented, it was a little disappointing that only three of us made it from Trearddur, and another WI managed just one brave delegate. The rest arrived in force with five or more members, which became very apparent during the roll call. As each WI was announced, members enthusiastically shouted “Here!” It quickly turned into an unofficial competition to see who could be the loudest, with plenty of laughter following each attempt. A lively start, to say the least.
The atmosphere stayed upbeat, helped along by our guest speaker, a retired doctor from Beaumaris, who spoke on “The Benefits to Getting Old.” As you might expect, this prompted a fair few cheeky comments from the audience. By the end of the talk, however, we were all feeling surprisingly reassured, and almost convinced that getting older might not be such a bad deal after all.
We were also delighted to receive a certificate marking 75 years of Trearddur Bay WI, which Karen proudly went up to collect on our behalf.
The meeting concluded with the National Anthem, first in English and then in Welsh. This year, we made full use of the smart TV, singing along with the women’s football team for the English version and the women’s rugby team for the Welsh. However, as it was a YouTube video, we first had to sit through a couple of minutes of an enthusiastic bathroom cleaner advert. This caused great amusement and plenty of laughter, proving that even at an official meeting, a bit of unexpected sparkle can steal the show.
So we ended the day exactly as we began: smiling, laughing, and thoroughly entertained. 😁
