Light-up bonnets, flashing bunny ears, LED decorations and other Easter novelties can be great fun. But these – and many cheap toys – are powered by button batteries that can badly hurt or kill a small child if swallowed.

So, if you buy button battery powered items, check the battery compartment is secured with a screw or similar fastener to prevent children gaining access. If it isn’t secure please keep it out of reach of children.

Button batteries can badly hurt or kill a small child if swallowed. Yet they will be found under almost every tree this Christmas. Watch out for easy-to-access button batteries in:

• Cheap toys from unknown sellers online
• Light-up decorations, singing Santas and flashing wands
• Gifts for pets, older children and adults

Plus, watch out for spare button batteries loose in the packaging. Be sure to keep them in a secure place out of children’s reach until they’re needed.

If you bring any button battery powered items into your home, please remember to check the battery compartment is secured with a screw or similar fastener. If it isn’t secure, please keep it out of reach of small children.

Halloween is almost here. Have you decided what your little ones will dress up as yet? Whatever you choose please keep safety in mind.

Remember:
🎃 Halloween costumes can be highly flammable so stay well away from naked flames and other heat sources
🎃 Try to buy from a reputable store or website. Cheap costumes may not meet UK safety standards.
🎃 Look for a costume with a UKCA or CE mark and be aware that cheap costumes may carry fake safety labels.
🎃 Look for a label that says: “This garment has undergone additional safety testing for flammability”.
🎃 Masks are spooktacular but they can make it harder for children to see or hear traffic. So, consider using face paint for trick or treating and save the masks for indoors.
🎃 Help make children more visible to drivers by adding reflective tape to their costumes or accessorising with glow sticks.
