Breathwork is more than just relaxation. It is about retraining how we breathe to optimise life, health, and performance. Whether you are looking to energise, find balance, or relax deeply, your breath holds the key.
Here are some of the powerful techniques Coach Graham Carter has shown us at our meetings!
- Coffee Breath (Kapalabhati / Shining Skull Breath / Breath of Fire): Coffee breathing is all about ready, set, go; breathing to fire you up and get you going. Kapalabhati is a stimulating practice to boost energy and mental clarity. To practise, sit comfortably with an upright posture. Take a deep inhale, then exhale forcefully through your nose while contracting your abdominal muscles. Allow the inhale to happen passively. We did 3 rounds of 20 breaths tonight, with a short pause between rounds
- Water Breath (Congruent Breathing / Samavritti): Water breathing is all about balance. Congruent breathing is a technique for calm and focus, involving equal length inhalations and exhalations. To practise, inhale through your nose for a count of four, then exhale through your nose for the same count. Maintain this steady rhythm for several minutes, allowing your breath to flow smoothly like water.
- Whiskey Breath (Extended Exhale Breathing): Whisky breathing helps you to relax, unwind and prepare for rest. Tonight we used extended exhalations to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. To practise, inhale gently through your nose for a count of four, then exhale slowly through your nose for a count of six or eight. Focus on releasing tension with each extended exhale. A great practice to help you fall asleep
Each technique helps regulate the nervous system and unlocks a specific state of mind and body. And breathwork is not just for meditation; it is also for life, sport, and being your best self.
