Yesterday, we celebrated an incredible milestone.
Richard (Akela) was presented with his 30 Years Service Award—a remarkable achievement and a testament to three decades of unwavering dedication to Scouting.
Thirty years of adventure. Thirty years of campfires, games, muddy boots, laughter and life lessons. Most importantly, thirty years of helping hundreds of young people discover confidence, resilience, friendships and skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
People often think volunteering is all about giving something back. The reality is that you receive just as much in return. Lifelong friendships, unforgettable experiences, the privilege of watching young people grow into confident adults, and countless moments that remind you why you keep coming back week after week.
Richard is living proof of that. His kindness, patience, humour and commitment have inspired generations of young people and volunteers alike. The impact he has made can’t be measured in badges or awards alone, it’s measured in the lives he’s helped shape over the last 30 years.
At 4th Eling Sea Scouts, we’re incredibly lucky to have a team of volunteers just like Richard. They’re ordinary people with busy lives, families and jobs, yet every week they choose to give a little of their time so that local young people can experience adventure, challenge and friendship. Together, they’re making a lasting difference to our community.
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, let Richard’s story be the inspiration you need. You don’t need to have been a Scout. You don’t need to know every knot, (he certainly doesn’t) or how to build a campfire in the rain or paddle a kayak. We’ll help you learn all of that. What matters most is that you care about helping young people reach their full potential.
Who knows? Thirty years from now, it could be you celebrating an incredible milestone, looking back on hundreds of lives you’ve helped shape and thousands of memories you’ve created.
The hardest step is often the first one—but it might just be the most rewarding decision you ever make.
