Friends of Academic Research in Georgia - Farig

Friends of Academic Research in Georgia - Farig FaRiG helps scholars in Georgia, working in the humanities, to carry out research and publish the results.

By doing this, FaRiG contributes to the preservation of Georgia's unique cultural and historical heritage and making their work better known in the international scholarly community. A registered charity since 2000, FaRiG was founded by Canon Dr John Wilkinson, who wrote widely on the history of Georgia and the Holy Land. FaRiG's chairmen since John have been Robert Scallon, Michael Vickers, Neil

Macfarlane, Donald Rayfield, Gillian Evison and Hubertus Jahn. Under their leadership, FaRiG has given well-targeted assistance to Georgian scholars who are working in the difficult conditions of post-Soviet life to document, analyse and maintain their country's 3,000-year-old patrimony, which ranges from epic poetry to folk music, from modern architecture to cinematography, from kelim to icons, from manuscripts to castles. Anybody with an interest in any aspect of Georgian scholarship and culture is warmly invited to contribute ideas and funding. FaRiG is happy to accept donations which are tied to particular projects which fall within its remit.

FaRiG is sharing the information about the upcoming Fifth Annual Oxford-Georgia Forum, organised by the Georgian Studies Programme at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies.

The Forum will take place at St Antony's College on 27 May 2026. The annual forum serves as a dynamic platform for exchanging knowledge about Georgia, bringing together scholars, practitioners, and students to share insights, foster dialogue, and deepen understanding of the country’s political, social, and cultural developments. This year’s forum centres on the current political climate in the country, the evolving geopolitical landscape in the region, as well as Georgian cultural and literary studies.
