Lovely sighting of an Osprey on Tuesday down on a south Devon estuary - thank you for sending the sighting through our website. These sightings help build a picture of areas that Ospreys are using frequently.

Fantastic to see one of the returning offspring from Birds of Poole Harbour Osprey pair fishing over the Axe in Devon.

Brilliant work by photographer Bob Longhorn who managed to photograph this Osprey down on the Axe Estuary, Devon this AM. The ring number clearly reads 5R0, meaning this is one of our fledged males from our Poole Harbour Careys Secret Garden nest back in 2024. He was one of four chicks in the nest that year, with his siblings sporting ring numbers 5R1, 5R2 and 5H6. It would be incredible to see all four arrive back over the next few months?!

He's back pretty early for a 2-year old, but there's always a chance he may have over-wintered much closer to 'home' with reasonable numbers now opting to over-winter in southern Spain and Portugal in recent years.

Anyway, it's great to see him back, no doubt he'll visit his natal nest site to annoy his parents some time over the coming weeks.

Great news. The successful breeding of Ospreys at Poole Harbour is a really important part of Ospreys returning to Devon. CJ7 has successfully returned to her nest from migration, and we hope everything goes well for 2026. Birds of Poole Harbour

FREE ONLINE TALK: Osprey spring migration – Wednesday 25th March 7:30pm

Spring is one of the most exciting times in the Osprey calendar as breeding birds return to the UK. In this free online talk OLF founder and Osprey expert Dr Tim Mackrill, who has a PhD on Osprey migration, will describe the amazing journeys the birds make as they traverse deserts, mountain ranges and seas in order to make a timely return to their nests from their wintering grounds. He’ll explain how satellite tracking has enhanced our understanding of these journeys and shed new light on some remarkable feats of endurance.

The talk is free but we ask that you consider making a donation to the Osprey Leadership Foundation in return.

March Update:

We have been busy refurbishing nests ready to hopefully entice and prospecting Ospreys to set up down here. Several of these nests were visited last year by Ospreys, which is a very positive sign.

We use Reolink cameras to monitor activity on these nests.

Collecting all the sticks is a very popular activity for the next generation of conservationists, always keen to get outside and collect “Osprey sticks”!

Thanks to Devon Environment Foundation for their support.

2025 has been a busy year for our project! We've successfully installed more artificial nests throughout Devon and have collaborated with groups in Cornwall and Somerset to boost Ospreys' breeding chances in the South West. Together, we're making a difference! Read more at https://wix.to/sSUanj7

Great to meet and chat with people at this fab event! Lots of people managed to see Ospreys on migration around the Otter estuary, particularly the juvenile from the Tweed Valley, and enjoyed hearing about what we are doing.

As Ospreys start leaving the UK for their wintering grounds here is a short summary of the project to date! Thank you to everyone who has helped facilitate various aspects of our work so far.

22 Osprey nests have been erected / built around Devon’s estuaries, which have all been in areas that we know Ospreys are using - this increases the chances of them being seen.

Ospreys have been landing and feeding on several nests, including visits during the summer months. These summer visits are important as they are likely to be young birds looking for breeding locations.

We will be updating our website with various pieces of information as the project continues to grow, you can view this at www.devonospreys.co.uk

We are now closer than ever to having Ospreys breeding in Devon after more than 200 years. You can support our work through the link on the website.
