Last week we welcomed Sustainable Ashpington for a walk called ‘Chewing the Cud’. Everyone enjoyed meeting our animals and talking about their vital role in rewilding our land (the pigs were the stars of the show as usual!). Brilliant conversations - thanks for coming everyone!

Jack snapped this sweet shot of young swallows at the top of the lane resting on a signpost after probably their first flight. 🪶

Fledging is a fast and fascinating milestone in a swallow’s life. After about three weeks of growing cramped in their mud nest, baby swallows leap straight into the unknown. Because their wings are fully developed before they leave, they are capable of flying well on their very first attempt.

The actual flying coms more naturally than the landing. First time flyers often land clumsily on a barn beam, telegraph wire, or in this case sign post, sometimes struggling to get solid footing right away.

Have you spotted any young swallows taking a perch?

Introducing Our New Team Members: Dan & Jaya! 🌱

🛠 Meet Dan, our new Ranger:

Dan has already hit the ground running with fence construction as our new ranger, and he brings with him a great sense of humour and a real desire to learn. Dan previously took part in our Spring 2025 Nature Recovery Traineeship, so it’s been brilliant to welcome him back to the farm community.

“Since joining the team I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working alongside our weekly volunteers. Come rain or shine, their dedication and enthusiasm has been a constant source of inspiration”.

🪴 & meet Jaya, our new Gardener:

Jaya has joined the garden team and got stuck in straight away: she’s been busy enabling various groups to join in the garden sessions, taking a lead on making more of our orchard, and bringing her excellent catering skills to our Breaking Bread project. Jaya was our 2025 Apricot Centre trainee, and we’re delighted to see her flourishing in her new role here.

“It's a joy to be involved with the journey of our food all the way from seed to plate! Especially seeing the smiles and connection that each step of the journey brings to the farm team.”

It’s wonderful to see former trainees continuing their journey with us, bringing fresh energy, skills and passion to our work. 💚

🌳 Earlier this spring we gathered to celebrate the completion of Ambios and the Sharpham Trust 's Wild About Trees project. What began as an ambitious vision to reconnect people, nature, and landscape has, over the past few years, grown into a living reality.

Funded by Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest through DEFRA'S Trees for Climate programme, the project set out to create a diverse wood-pasture landscape across the estate - blending open grassland, scattered trees, shrubs, and hedgerows to support wildlife, strengthen habitat connectivity, honour Sharpham's historic landscape, and create lasting opportunities for learning and community engagement. We are delighted to have seen this vision take root and flourish. 🌱

To mark the close of this chapter, Ambios alumni Hatty and Ellie led a moving ceremony in Badger Field, joined by many of the people who had helped shape the project along the way. To listen to the full recording of Ellie’s The Wandering Shruti beautiful Jay Song, and find out more about the project, see the link in the comments. 🎶

Deep gratitutude to all who have contributed their time, energy, knowledge, and enthusiasm over the past several years; this project would not have been possible without you. 🙏🏽 💚

We’ve got out next Breaking Bread Feast tomorrow lunchtime! Sima (The Kitchen Table) and the team will be serving up a Greek 🇬🇷 inspired menu: slow cooked lamb or a butterbean and veg stew, served with a potato and green bean salad with a lemony, mint and olive oil dressing. And of course there will be lots of fresh homemade bread… delish! 🥖

Today the United Response in Devon guys were in the garden harvesting broad beans and marris peer new potatoes for tomorrow’s salad. It was an especially exciting moment as it was the first potato harvest of the season, and these particular spuds were planted back at the beginning of March by a visiting school group from South Devon Steiner School

If you fancy coming along to tomorrow’s event you can email your interest at [email protected], or find out more via the link in our bio. See you there! 🍞

Our herd of belties are much loved members of our farm community! 🐄

With their iconic ‘belt’ and thick, weatherproof coats, Belted Galloways are hardy cattle and natural conservation grazers. Their unselective grazing helps restore habitats, creating space for wildflowers and boosting biodiversity across our land. 🌼

Our herd are also steady and easy to handle, which makes them perfect for our educational work. We share our site with partners United Response, a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, and time spent with the herd is always a highlight for the guys there (especially on cattle-herding days!). 🐮

A couple of years ago a few of our Belties set off to join Derek Gow at his rewilding site in West Devon Rewilding Coombeshead, and we like to think they’re continuing their good work in new landscapes 🌱

📸: Thank you Mike and Shirley for the photos!
