Saturday 7th June Car Boot. We will be going ahead tomorrow on Colwell Common. The lease come along and support the West Wight Men in Sheds. Sellers can arrive 8.30am although we will allow earlier buyers from 9am.

Men’s Sheds, Change Lives

West Wight Men In Sheds, we look upon our Shed as a collective noun for a group of people working towards a common goal. Our shed is primarily (but not exclusively) aimed at people aged 18+.

There are many reasons why you may want to join our shed. Maybe you’re retired and looking to fill some of your time. You may currently be unemployed and need that ‘boost’ to gain conﬁdence and skills. You may have a long term medical condition that stops you from carrying out regular work.

Whatever your circumstances as soon as you walk through our door you will become a ‘Shedder’, and will be welcomed in whichever capacity you wish to be involved.

A shed can be located anywhere, not just in a workshop. It could be in a school, be part of another community group in a church hall, or even in a back garden. Our shed is based on Totland Recreational Ground and has a 23ft Workshop and a Kitchen/Rest Area.

The important thing is that the men get to work on projects together.

Why are we needed?

For a long time research has shown the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on a person’s health and wellbeing. Recently we have seen more evidence come to light that shows loneliness and isolation can be bad for our health as obesity and excessive smoking. Mental health charities are finding that millions of people report feeling lonely on a daily basis.

Research shows men find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and unlike women men normally have networks of friends and rarely share personal concerns about health and worries. It’s not the case for all men, but for some, when retirement comes, it can feel like there personal identity and purpose has been lost. Men In Sheds can change that.

Men In Sheds are about meeting like-minded people and having someone to share your worries with. They are about having fun, sharing skills, knowledge, and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. With all of this it helps reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, Men In Sheds allow men to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent, they help rebuild communities and in many cases, they save men’s lives.
