Have you thought about what matters to you at the end of life? 💙

Talking about death and dying can be difficult, but planning ahead can be a compassionate way of making things easier for the ones we love.

Our wonderful bereavement volunteer Dot Martin knows this first-hand. After losing her husband, Dot experienced the challenges that can come with trying to navigate practical matters while grieving.

After attending Rowcroft’s Advance Care Planning Course, Dot felt more comfortable starting conversations about end-of-life wishes. She now visits community groups and local ‘death cafes’, encouraging others to think about the things they might not otherwise consider – from making a Will and planning a funeral, to accessing digital accounts and thinking about future care for dependents.

“I also think it’s a compassionate act for your loved ones,” says Dot. “They’re not left with these decisions when you’re gone, because you’ve already planned and simplified it for them.”

50 half marathons. One incredible year. Over £5,500 raised for local hospice care. 💜👏

A huge congratulations to Newton Abbot’s Geoff Pring, who finished his 50th and final half marathon at Rowcroft today, completing an extraordinary challenge to mark his 50th birthday! 🏅

From his first half marathon in Palma to winter mornings on Devon’s lanes, hilly coastal routes and running alongside his son Oliver in Liverpool, Geoff has shown incredible dedication throughout the year.

Along the way, he also joined Team Rowcroft at the Torbay Half Marathon and shared his story to inspire our other runners.

Through his work at Buckfast Abbey, Geoff has heard first-hand how much Rowcroft’s care means to local families. Losing his close university friend, Giles, also strengthened his determination to make the most of life and support others.

Geoff, thank you for every early start, every mile and every bit of heart you’ve put into this challenge. Your support helps us provide specialist care and comfort to people living with life-limiting illnesses and those closest to them. 💜

Well done to Kate Holmes for completing her fire walk and raising over £900 for Rowcroft!🔥

Kate, our Senior Community Fundraiser, bravely walked across a 20-foot bed of hot wood embers burning at 668°C, all to support specialist care to thousands of patients and their loved ones across South Devon

Thank you, Kate, for your amazing bravery and determination, and to everyone who has supported her fundraising. 💜

A big thank you also to Rotary Newton Abbot for organising the event, Newton Abbot Racecourse for hosting, and Blaze, The Firewalking Experts, for guiding Kate through the challenge.

Today is both World Hospice & Palliative Care Day and World Homeless Day, and together they are a reminder that hospice and palliative care needs to reach everyone who needs it.

People experiencing homelessness can face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, including palliative and end-of-life care.

At Rowcroft, we believe care should be accessible and centred around the individual, including people who may not have a permanent place to call home.

Because everyone deserves compassionate care. 💜

Meet the speakers at the UK Dementia & Palliative Care Conference 2027 🎤

We’re delighted to welcome an inspiring line-up of national and international experts to Buckfast Abbey on Wednesday 24 March 2027 for a full day of learning, discussion and practical insight.

Our international headline speaker is Teun Toebes, renowned dementia advocate, healthcare innovator and bestselling author. Teun will deliver his keynote, Changing the Narrative: Zero Risks, Zero Life, exploring how we can challenge perceptions and approaches to dementia care.

Alongside Teun, the conference brings together leading voices from across dementia, palliative care, research, clinical practice and education, with expertise spanning post-diagnostic support, dementia care, end-of-life care, delirium, loneliness, relationships and connection.

The programme will also include interactive workshops, opportunities to share experiences, practical approaches to care and a panel discussion exploring the future of dementia and palliative care.

Designed for healthcare professionals, researchers, carers, support workers and others working across health and social care, the conference is an opportunity to learn from experts, exchange ideas and take fresh perspectives back into practice.
