Benvenuto Cellini is just three years old.
This weekend, he is one of the favourites for the Epsom Derby, where £1 million in prize money is on offer. Last month, he won over £82,000 for his owners after being struck repeatedly with a whip to push him faster towards the finish line.
Like many Derby winners before him, his future is already mapped out if he succeeds. He may be retired from racing within a year or two and sent to stud, where he could spend the rest of his life being bred repeatedly for profit.
If he continues racing, he faces the ever present risk of injury and death that shadows the industry.
Behind the glamour, champagne and million pound prizes are horses like Benvenuto, still children, bred for human gain and denied any choice over their own lives.
My name is Benvenuto Cellini. I am someone. 🤍
