Tollesbury Climate Partnership

Tollesbury Climate Partnership TCP was set up by local residents in August 2021 to reduce the impact of climate change. Membership of TCP is open to all who support our Vision.

Tollesbury Climate Partnership (TCP) is a democratic, voluntary organisation. It's controlled by its members with elected representatives being accountable to the membership. TCP's vision is that our community will be working together to reduce the impact of climate change and protect the Tollesbury we love for future generations. Our objectives are to:
(a) Reduce carbon emissions, protect the env

ironment, and maintain and improve biodiversity;
(b) Research, promote, advise on and instigate community energy schemes;
(c) Raise awareness of the issues associated with climate change, scarcity of resources, and economic sustainability;
(d) Increase community resilience to the impacts of climate change;
(e) Collate information, knowledge, and expertise to advocate and influence policies and plans that relate to climate change; and
(f) Actively working with other stakeholders to harness the energies of the local community to achieve (a) to (e) above. We currently have 6 working groups and need more people to join us! Community Engagement - Julie Heller [email protected]

๐Ÿ Did you know there are around 270 different species of bee in the UK?

When most people think of bees, they think of honey bees or bumblebees. But amazingly, around 90% of our native bee species are solitary bees!

If you watch closely in your garden, on a walk around the village, or even in the Community Orchard, you might spot a species youโ€™ve never noticed before.

This beautiful bee was spotted enjoying some lavender on East Street. We think it might be a Four-banded Flower Bee (Anthophora quadrimaculata) โ€” but weโ€™d love to hear from any bee enthusiasts who can confirm the identification! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’œ

Every bee plays an important role in pollinating the plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables that support both wildlife and people.

๐Ÿ“ธ Have you spotted any interesting bees, butterflies or other pollinators in Tollesbury?

Share your photos in the comments so we can discover whatโ€™s buzzing around our village! ๐ŸŒธ

๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฆ€ SAVE THE DATE! ๐Ÿ

Tollesbury Apple Day returns on Saturday 17th October!

If youโ€™re lucky enough to have an apple or pear tree, now is the time to start thinking about your harvest.

๐Ÿ Save your apples and pears
๐Ÿ“ฆ Store them on trays in a cool, dark place
๐Ÿ Keep varieties separate where possible
โ™ป๏ธ Compost any damaged or rotten fruit

Every year, thousands of perfectly good apples go to waste. Apple Day is all about bringing our community together to celebrate local fruit, reduce waste, learn about orchards, and turn surplus apples into something delicious.

Whether you have a basketful or a wheelbarrow full, weโ€™d love you to get involved.

More details coming soon, but for nowโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Save the date
๐Ÿ‘‰ Save your apples
๐Ÿ‘‰ Tell your neighbours

Letโ€™s make this yearโ€™s Apple Day the biggest yet! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

โ™ป๏ธ NEW RECYCLING CALENDAR 2026โ€“27 โ™ป๏ธ

Have you received your new recycling calendar yet?

Maldon District Council has published the collection dates for 2026โ€“27, helping residents plan ahead for refuse, recycling, food waste and garden waste collections.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ If youโ€™re on Tuesday Route 1, your collection dates are shown below.
โฐ Remember to leave bins, sacks and boxes out by 7am on collection day.

Recycling correctly helps reduce waste, conserve resources and lower the amount sent to landfill. Every item recycled is a small action that contributes to a greener future ๐ŸŒ

Not sure what can be recycled locally?

TCPโ€™s community recycling scheme collects 21 additional waste streams including:
๐Ÿ”‹ Batteries
๐Ÿ’Š Empty blister packs
๐Ÿ‘“ Spectacles
๐Ÿ‘™ Bras
๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ Pens
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Candle wax
๐Ÿพ Corks
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Contact lens cases
โ€ฆand much more!

Together, we can continue to reduce waste and make a difference in Tollesbury ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒŠ World Ocean Day ๐ŸŒŠ

Conservation organisations including the Essex Wildlife Trust are helping to map, protect and restore seagrass meadows around our coastline. ๐ŸŒฑ

Seagrass may not look like much, but it is one of natureโ€™s superpowers:
๐Ÿ’š Absorbs and stores carbon
๐ŸŸ Provides nursery habitats for fish and marine life
๐Ÿฆ€ Supports biodiversity
๐ŸŒŠ Helps stabilise sediments and improve water quality

The waters around Tollesbury are part of a nationally important coastal environment, and projects such as these help us better understand how we can protect and restore these valuable habitats for future generations.

This World Ocean Day, letโ€™s celebrate not only the wonderful oceans themselves, but also the incredible wildlife and ecosystems right on our doorstep.

Have you ever spotted seagrass, seahorses, wading birds or other marine wildlife around the Blackwater Estuary? Weโ€™d love to hear your stories below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“ธ Why not share your favourite photo of the estuary with us too?

Two years ago, we started a simple idea:
to help make it easier for Tollesbury to recycle more and waste less โ™ป๏ธ

On the 3rd of June, our recycling scheme turns 2 years old ๐ŸŽ‰

Since then, together we have:
๐ŸŒ Collected 21 different items
โ™ป๏ธ Diverted well over a tonne of waste from landfill
๐Ÿ’Š Recycled approximately 19,500 empty blister packs
๐Ÿ“ฆ Filled 13 blister pack collection boxes
๐Ÿ‘“ Reused and recycled hundreds of spectacles
๐Ÿ‘™โ€ฆand bras
๐Ÿ”‹ Recycled countless batteries, printer cartridges, pens, corks, contact lens cases and more!

But none of this would have been possible without:
๐Ÿ’š Our fantastic hosts who made space for collection points
๐Ÿ’š Our volunteers who help sort and manage everything
๐Ÿ’š And YOU โ€” the amazing people of Tollesbury who continue to use the schemes

Every battery, blister pack, pen, bra, cork and contact lens case really does make a difference!

Thank you for helping to build a greener Tollesbury and proving what a community can achieve when people work together ๐Ÿ’š

Letโ€™s keep diverting waste from landfill and making a difference โ€” together โ™ป๏ธ

Trees are natureโ€™s air conditioning ๐ŸŒฟโ˜€๏ธ

During periods of extreme heat, trees help cool the environment naturally by blocking direct sunlight and releasing moisture into the air.

Shaded areas beneath trees can feel between 5โ€“15ยฐC cooler than exposed surfaces such as concrete or asphalt โ€” making parks, streets and green spaces far more comfortable for people and wildlife alike.

As our climate continues to change, trees are becoming increasingly important in helping communities stay cooler, healthier and more resilient ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Another reason why protecting existing trees and planting new ones matters so much ๐ŸŒณ

Ever wondered what the black pipes next to the orchard trees are for? ๐Ÿ’ง ๐ŸŒณ

These are watering tubes! Perforated tubing has been wrapped around each treeโ€™s root ball so water can be poured directly down to the thirsty roots where itโ€™s needed most.

When we water only on the surface, it doesnโ€™t always soak deeply enough into the soil โ€” especially during dry weather. These tubes help make sure the young fruit trees get a proper drink and stay healthy ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒฑ

If youโ€™re passing the orchard and fancy helping out, please feel free to pick up a watering can and water a tree or two ๐Ÿ’š

Donโ€™t worry โ€” you donโ€™t have to do them all! We have a fantastic team of volunteers who help water the trees weekly to keep them hydrated.

If youโ€™d like to get involved with the orchard project, please send us a message or email:

๐Ÿž Ladybirds are here to help! ๐ŸŒฟ

These little garden heroes are fantastic natural pest controllers, helping to keep greenfly and blackfly populations under control โ€” pests which can damage leaves, young shoots and fruit trees ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒฑ

Every ladybird in the orchard is hard at work helping nature find its balance without the need for chemicals.

So if you spot any ladybirds around the villageโ€ฆ send them up to the orchard! ๐Ÿž๐Ÿ’š
