🌱 One day. One brilliant team. A lasting difference at The People's Patch Coventry. 💚

Last week, volunteers from SEGRO joined Groundwork West Midlands at The People’s Patch in Coventry for their SEGRO Day of Giving, helping us make an important part of the space even better for people and wildlife.

The team focused their efforts on transforming the pond area, getting stuck into:

🔨 Building, installing and painting new benches
🌼 Sowing wildflowers, including yellow rattle, around the pond banks
🌿 Strengthening the willow archway
💧 Clearing overgrown vegetation and debris to create more open water for wildlife

Every improvement adds to what The People’s Patch can offer. It’s a place where local people can connect with nature, learn about food growing, spend time together and enjoy the outdoors, while providing valuable space for wildlife too. 🌿🐝

Corporate volunteering plays an important role in helping us continue to develop and care for spaces like this.

🦎🍂 Newt know-how!

Our country parks and green spaces are home to all kinds of wildlife, including some of our smallest residents!

As the weather gets colder, newts seek out sheltered places such as leaf piles, long grass and loose soil. These wilder areas can provide valuable places for amphibians during the colder months.

At Groundwork West Midlands, caring for green spaces isn't just about creating great places for people. It's also about helping nature and wildlife thrive. 💚🌿

So next time you're exploring one of our green spaces, remember there could be plenty of wildlife tucked away nearby!

🍃 A day of practical action for nature and accessibility at The Potters' Patch

Last week, our Nature Recovery team spent the day at The Potters' Patch in Hanley, extending the garden pathway to make the space more accessible for everyone who visits.

With plenty of shovelling, levelling, compacting and stone laying, the team worked hard throughout the day to create a durable pathway that will help more people enjoy the garden, take part in activities and connect with nature.

It's improvements like these that make a real difference, helping to create community spaces that are welcoming, inclusive and accessible to all.

A fantastic team effort and another positive step forward for The Potters' Patch. 🌱

💚 World Mental Health Day 💚

Today is a reminder that looking after our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health.

At Groundwork West Midlands, we see every day how getting outdoors, connecting with others and accessing the right support can make a real difference to wellbeing. Whether it's spending time in our country parks, joining a Go Play session where families can enjoy quality time together, or speaking to our Green Doctor team for free energy advice that can help reduce financial stress, we're proud to support healthier, happier communities.

🍂🌳 Wellies in the Woods is back at The People's Patch Coventry! 🌳🍂

We're excited to be welcoming families back to The People's Patch in Coventry for another round of outdoor adventures, messy play, nature exploration and community fun.

Starting on Tuesday 20th October, join us every Tuesday from 1:00pm - 2:30pm for our free 8-week Wellies in the Woods programme, designed for pre-school children and their parent or carer.

Whether you're new to the area, looking to meet other families, or simply want to spend more time outdoors together, Wellies in the Woods offers a warm and welcoming space to connect, learn and play. From discovering wildlife and creating nature-inspired crafts to sharing stories and making memories, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

At Groundwork, we know that some of the best friendships begin around shared experiences, and Wellies in the Woods is all about bringing families together, building confidence, and helping children develop a lifelong love of nature.

🌱 The power of Corporate Social Responsibility in action!

Last week, Groundwork West Midlands welcomed a fantastic team from Balfour Beatty to Princethorpe Junior School for a Corporate Social Responsibility volunteering day.

Together, they helped transform the school's outdoor learning and play spaces by:

🌳 Planting fruit trees
🌱 Filling raised growing beds with soil
👩‍🍳 Building a mud kitchen for the nursery
🏕️ Creating portable and fixed den-building frames
✂️ Cutting back overgrown areas around the site
🎨 Refreshing outdoor equipment, benches, play features and learning spaces

CSR days like these show the real difference businesses can make in their local communities. By donating time, skills and expertise, companies can help schools and community organisations deliver projects that improve wellbeing, create new opportunities for young people and leave a lasting legacy that benefits future generations.

The impact of the day was summed up perfectly by members of the Princethorpe Junior School Council:

At Unity Brew Community Café in Tipton, created by Groundwork West Midlands, we’re proud to provide a warm and welcoming space where local people can come together, enjoy affordable and nutritious food, take part in activities and events, and simply enjoy a coffee and a chat. 🥰

❤️ Could you help support grassroots organisations tackling poverty?

Groundwork West Midlands is looking for volunteers to join the Comic Relief Community Grants Panel.

As a panel member, you’ll help assess applications from community-led organisations and play a part in deciding how grants of up to £5,000 are allocated.

🌟 What will you do?

Read and score funding applications against the fund’s criteria

Take part in panel discussions and share your views

Help make fair and consistent funding decisions

Suggest conditions or recommendations to strengthen funded projects

Bring your community knowledge, experience and insight to the process

You don’t need previous experience of grant-making.

We’re looking for people who can assess information fairly, listen to different perspectives and contribute to respectful, constructive discussions.

We’re particularly interested in hearing from people with local knowledge, community experience or lived experience of poverty-related issues.

By volunteering your time, you could help grassroots organisations access funding for projects that support people facing poverty and help communities become stronger and more resilient. 💪❤️

💚 What a difference a day can make!

On 17 September, the whole Groundwork West Midlands team came together, with colleagues from across our offices joining forces for our annual away day.

This year, rather than simply spending the day together, we wanted to give something back. So we headed to Baggeridge Miniature Railway to lend a hand to the amazing volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the site.

Our teams rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in, completing a huge amount of work in just one day:

🌱 Built four raised beds
♻️ Turned 30 recycled tyres into planters
🎨 Painted four containers and the train station
🌿 Cleared weeds and tidied areas around the 1km track

And the impact? The team at Baggeridge told us that the work we completed in one day would normally have taken their volunteers around six months to achieve!

It was a brilliant day of teamwork, hard work and plenty of muddy boots — but most importantly, it was a chance for us to use our time and energy to support a fantastic community-run site. 💚

A huge thank you to all the volunteers at Baggeridge Miniature Railway for welcoming us, and to everyone across Groundwork West Midlands who got stuck in and helped make such a difference.
