The May gobs are behind us and June has started out with a much-needed watering of the county. The rain hasn’t been steady, mostly light drizzle with the occasional heavy showers. However, the river height is 12 inches today and that is very good. For May, only two salmon were caught, both by Jim Cameron at 8 and 9 pounds. The 8-pound fish was released. Bookings were up with 43 fishing sessions reserved, 15 by visiting anglers. The local anglers are upbeat this year as conditions are so good. I must admit, after walking the beat twice this season, the association water hasn’t looked this good in a while this early on in the season. Besides the visiting anglers, we had a few new wildlife visitors to. A black throated diver and a young swan in the lower reaches of the river. Nearer to the cemetery bridge on the Mount Vernon side, two roe deer were seen roaming in the thicket along the brae. It’s always nice to see the wildlife, it tells me the environment is in great condition. Hopefully the salmon catches will increase as we see June out. I encourage our local anglers to wet a line. Stan

Sometimes things happen you can't explain, is it luck, the right place at the right time, or is it years of experience and skill coming to fruition? I think it probably is a combination of all three. Today Hugo Ross landed and released another fresh salmon from the Salmon Pool, a beautiful 9 pounder. Lets take this all in for a second. Hugo caught the first fish on the upper river, he caught the first fish on the association water, and today he managed a third salmon. I wish I were there to see the smile on his face. Congratulations again Hugo and many more hook-ups to you this season. Just writing this short wee paragraph makes me smile feeling your joy. Stan

The first salmon has been caught on the association water today by Hugo Ross. Congratulations to Hugo for a lovely 9 pound fish caught from the Salmon Pool. So far this month, (April) bookings have been on the thin side. Cold winds and wet conditions haven't been very welcoming to our local anglers. On a positive note, the river is really in good shape, with plenty of water and should be attracting members. Hopefully, with the first fish caught, this will spark more bookings in the last days of April and beyond. Stan

On 10 April I took a walk along the top of the beat down to the Mack Pool. The river really looked good, a nice height of water at 14 inches and running very cleanly. I checked on the fishing hut and serviced the locks with oil making sure members and guests could operate the combination locks. All was well, nice and clean inside as it was on closing day last season. Two guests were on the river and I stopped to have a chat with them. They had the river all to themselves. Apart from the cool wind out of the east, it was a fine day for fishing. No members have booked on since the start of April which I find unusual given the good water conditions and 4 salmon caught on the upper beats. Hopefully, the weather will warm up and this cold east wind will change direction to a more pleasant southerly one in the coming days. I encourage the members to have a cast as the river is really nice this year with plenty of water. Stan

Today, March 2nd, was absolutely beautiful. We have finally seen a warming up and it actually got up to 13 today. The river is in good shape running clean and currently at a very good height. It would be nice to see some of the members book on as today would have been time well spent on the association water. The campaign to encourage members to pay their membership by direct debit or standing order has proved very successful. All but 14 members have now paid this way. Next season payment will not be accepted at Newsbeat so I encourage our 14 holdouts to set up their payments through their bank. I have sent out the payment method to all members at least three times so everyone should have it. But, just in case you have misplaced it, here is how you pay your membership from now on.
Pay into the Bank of Scotland
Name of Account: Thurso Angling Association ... Sort Code: 80-22-60 ... Acct # 15716564 ...
You can set up your payment schedule now for season 2027 with a onetime yearly payment (in January) of £40.00 pounds either by direct debit or standing order.

The holidays are past now and we can start to look forward to a new fishing season. Let’s hope the extremely dry conditions that dominated last season do not return in 2026. I hope all of you are getting your fishing gear sorted for the upcoming season. Now is the time to clean up the rods and reels and sort out the salmon flies if you didn’t do so at the end of last year’s fishing season.
All members have been requested to start paying their memberships by direct debit or standing order starting this season. Please use the banking information below to send your £40.00 pound membership fee with a yearly direct debit/standing order effective 11 January.

October 5th and another salmon season has come to an end. For better or for worse, this season will be remembered as the poorest season in over 40 years. September usually produces plenty of salmon but this year not one was caught. Despite this, there were plenty of salmon seen throughout the association water. They just didn’t seem interested in any fly offerings cast their way. On a good note, one fish was caught in October, an 8-pound salmon by visiting angler Mr. L. Dalgleish. When reporting his catch, Mr. Dalgleish commented on how well kept the association beat was. I thanked him for his comments and invited him back for next season. It’s time now to gather all the yearly statistics, compile them into a folder and file away into the history box. In a few days, the pre-AGM paperwork will commence, a current members list made up for membership payments for year 2026, and we can look forward to a new season commencing on January 11th 2026. Many thanks to our members and visiting anglers who fished this year under very trying and difficult conditions. Hope to see all of you return in the coming season. All the best, Stan, Secretary Thurso Angling Association.

Recap of 2025 season so far on the Association Beat. (Beat 1)
The opening of the season was normal enough with plenty of water in the river on opening day 11 January. Opening day was booked by members Graeme Sutherland, Alan MacLennan, Shane McGinley, and Stewart Mackenzie. If my recollection is correct, it was a cold day and icing may have been a problem with the eyes of the rod as there was ice in the river. Never-the-less, it’s always nice to see a few brave souls dress up warmly and give the river a go on opening day. From opening day until the end of March 37 sessions were booked by members. From April until 23 May, there were only 13 bookings. Rain had been elusive in earlier months and the river levels were dropping steadily throughout this period, hence the lack of bookings. From 7 May until 23 May there were no bookings because the river was at its lowest level seen in many years. From 24 May until 31 May there were 15 bookings, 12 from visitor bookings placed earlier in the year and 3 member bookings. Again, conditions remained very poor. In June there were 31 bookings despite the continuing poor conditions. During several days in June rain clouds gathered but despite the promising hope of rain, very little fell from the intermittent showers except some scant rain drops. Rain finally came on the 29th of June. The river rose several inches and on the 1st of July bookings increased and remained very good until the river dropped again starting on the 8th of July. Despite the poor outlook once again, the first fish of the season was caught by Derek Brown (actually 3 fish) on 5 July, the best fish being 4 pounds. While bookings dropped off, a few fish were being taken. 68 booking were made for the month of July. For the month 1 salmon and 9 grilse were caught, 3 were kept and 7 released. The best fish of the month was caught by Jim Cameron at 11 pounds. The disappointing drought continued on into August. Despite grim conditions, 22 bookings were made during the month. 7 fish were caught, 1 salmon, 6 grilse, 2 were kept and 5 released. The best fish was caught by Graeme Sutherland at 8 pounds. On a sour note, membership fell by 14 this year probably due to the poor conditions we have experienced during the last 3 years. There seems to be a shift towards dryer seasons now for some reason. Whatever the reason, I sincerely hope those 14 previous members will return given favourable conditions in the coming season. Despite a rather dismal season so far, the dry conditions open up opportunities for the association to make improvements and repairs to the beat. So far this season we have spent over 4 thousand pounds on improvements and bank repairs. I will enclose a few pictures for our readers to see. Norman Arrowsmith and I repaired the hut door, replacing rusty and bent hinges and damaged combination locks. We gave the hut a good sweep out and emptied the trash bucket. The walkway from the Salmon Pool to the Mack Pool has been replaced. It is now wider and more stable than before. That’s over 600 feet of walkway anew. Many thanks to Eain Sutherland for a job well done. River bank repairs were also undertaken at Geise Stream Pool. The bank on the east side of the head of the pool was badly eroded many feet downstream. Bobo Sutherland levelled out the bank and placed rock armour along the length of the damaged bank hopefully ensuring no more erosion will occur. We thankfully appreciate his efforts. I also want to express my sincere thanks to Vince Smith who I refer to as the green’s keeper. Vince takes care of the banks working tirelessly strimming and doing other jobbies for the association. What he does is probably the hardest work on the beat. As a committeeman, I have been there and it’s a hard job. Despite this, Vince soldiers on with enthusiasm and determination to do a good job. All of us benefit from his hard work. If you see him thank him very much, we certainly appreciate what you do Vince. The final bill for the bank repairs is not in at this writing. I will update once we have the final invoice at hand. I also want to extend my gratitude to Jamie McCarthy and Norman Arrowsmith who have contributed much of their time to committee work this year. Without their help the management of the association would be difficult to say the least. Many thanks to both of you for your tireless work and assistance. Last but not forgotten, many thanks to Eddie McCarthy who over the course of a season is called many times, not only to update him with association business but he also serves as a wealth of river knowledge. His advice is often sought after, freely given, and appreciated. All in all, this committee along with Eddie form and mesh into a well function organization which I am forever grateful for. In a nutshell, it makes my job easy with all the help and assistance I receive. I will now attach a few pictures of the bank repairs and the new walkway.
