On Saturday, Thurso Rotary Club held its second 'book swap and coffee morning' in The Pentland Hotel. A wide selection of books was available, with members of the public invited to take away any books which were of interest, and perhaps donate some books in return, whist also enjoying a coffee and some tasty local baking. A busy and enjoyable morning was had, with local author Charlotte Platt also attending, presenting two of her published novels.

The annual Thurso Rotary Club Primary Schools Quiz took place last night in front of a packed Thurso West Church ( now North Coast and the Flows) to watch an exciting competition between 7 teams representing Reay, Castletown, Halkirk, Crossroads/Bower, Pennyland, Miller and Mount Pleasant primary schools. Scoring was very close all through the competition with the eventual winners Castletown narrowly beating Pennyland , who came a close second with the joint Crossroads/ Bower team not far behind. All teams were credit to their schools and all gave a fine performance of their knowledge and skills.

Thurso Rotary Club were very pleased that on Tuesday 10 March 2026 over 80 people attended our 2026 Sponsored Lecture by: Rebecca Ridgway titled: “Looking for Leocadia”. The Talk was a hybrid event in the Mill Theatre in Thurso and on-line via zoom. Rebecca Ridgway presented in person to a packed Mill Theatre with attendees from Caithness and Sutherland as well as around the UK, Austria and Mexico: a real International event from Thurso.

Rebecca talked about her home on the remote peninsula of Ardmore on the northwest coast of Sutherland, the challenges of her childhood and bringing up her own children there, to running Ridgway Adventure with her partner Mark, for 25 years. She kayaked around Cape Horn in 1992 and spent 18 months sailing across the seas. A true adventurer in every respect. She talked about her recent trip to Peru in 2025 to find Leocadia, the mother of her adopted sister 40 years after her family adopted Elisabeth, whilst on a journey in war-torn area of the Andes.

Rebecca really delivered an exceptional talk with some amazing supporting photographs in such a clear, self effacing and calm manner. The magnitude of Rebecca’s expeditions and experience around the world really are quite extraordinary and special. They really underpin the significance of such an ongoing important and enduring Adventure space and experience in Ardmore.

Axelle Parriaux joined the Talk on-line and provided the following comment: “Many Thanks Rebecca: listening from the Pacific coast in Mexico, your story and courage build much depth into my adventure.”

In addition a number of early local connections to Ardmore and the incredible 60 years of the Ridgway Adventure School were highlighted in the audience.

Thurso Rotary Club: Past President: Jennifer Davenport delivered a very observant “Vote of Thanks” on behalf of everyone attending.

It was a valuable opportunity, very positively received and Thurso Rotary Club are extremely grateful to Rebecca Ridgway for such an engaging, memorable and very special Talk.
