Thurso RNLI lifeboat The Taylors was launched today, Saturday 9th May, at 4.34pm, on a request from HM Coastguard who had received a telephone call from a yachtsman who said that he felt unwell and confused and believed he was roughly a mile north of Dunnet Head. The Taylors, under coxswain Gordon Munro, made haste to the area and arrived at 4.55pm. It was noted by the crew that the yacht seemed to be steering in an erratic manner. The lifeboat managed to get alongside and a causality care trained member of the crew boarded the 10 metre yacht. The RNLI crew member took control of the vessel as the sole occupant on board the yacht wanted to rest.
The Lifeboat escorted the yacht back to Scrabster where it was secured to a pontoon in the Marina at 7.50pm. The Scottish Ambulance Service were waiting for the yacht to arrive and with the help of RNLI crew boarded the vessel to check the condition of the occupant.
The Taylors was refuelled and made ready for service at 8pm.

Thurso RNLI lifeboat The Taylors was launched today, Wednesday 4th March, at 1.30pm in response to a call made to HM Coastguard by a kayaker who was in difficulty. He was in strong tides and heavy seas in an area known by locals as The Merry Men of Mey, between Stroma and the Caithness mainland.
The Kayaker’s only means of communication was a mobile phone so trying to pinpoint his position was challenging. The Taylors made speed to the approximate area, arriving at 2.06pm, and started a search.
At 2.36pm crew members located the kayaker in the 3 metre waves and took him on board the lifeboat. The kayak was also recovered. The kayaker was checked by casualty care trained crew members and apart from being exhausted he appeared in good condition. Coxswain Gordon Munro then took The Taylors to John O Groats harbour where the kayaker was handed over to the local Coastguard team.
The Taylors returned to Scrabster at 3.24pm where the lifeboat was refuelled and made ready for service.
The kayaker launched from Huna with the intention of going to Stroma to camp for the night but not being local he was unaware of how notoriously changeable and unpredictable that area of The Pentland Firth can be.
Thankfully he did the right thing in contacting the Coastguard as soon as he got into difficulties.
