1st Thurso Boys' Brigade The Boys' Brigade: Faith in Young People William Smith - Founder Of The Boys Brigade
William Smith was born at Pennyland House, Thurso in 1854. He died in 1914.

He went to Glasgow at an early age and went into his uncle's business. In his spare time he carried out much church work and also was a member of the Lanark Volunteers. It was in 1883 that the first meeting of The Boys Brigade was held at North Woodside Hall, Glasgow. The movement spread slowly round Britain and overseas. William Smith eventually gave up his employment to become the full-time Brig

ade Secretary. In 1909 William Smith was knighted for his services to youth. A new museum dedicated to William Smith Founder of The Boys Brigade has opened in Thurso

The now retired has now arrived at the Boys’ Brigade Museum in Thurso. The Baton will take up residency in the Museum where it can be viewed by visitors.

The Baton and a 140 Baton Book was delivered to the Museum by NSA Secretary Jenny Sclater to Johanna Geddes, Captain of 1st Thurso.

The Baton is on loan to the Museum from Buchan Battalion from where it originated in 1983.

The Rt Hon. the Viscount Thurso read out the letter from His Majesty The King.

Alan Mackintosh, captain of 1st Buckie in his final role as Chairperson of the Baton Committee gave the thanks.

The baton was then passed along the boys from 1st Thurso that were in attendance, and on to 1st Thurso Captain Johanna Geddes, who passed it on to Esther Slater from Orkney Battalion.

1st Thurso would like to wish Orkney all the best with the baton.
