Highlands & Islands Climate Hub

Highlands & Islands Climate Hub Supporting and embedding community led climate action in the Highlands & Islands Two regions have been selected for an initial pilot phase of the Regional Hubs.

In 2020 the Scottish Government announced plans to establish a network of Regional Community Climate Action Hubs. The aim of the Regional Hubs is to provide advice, support and encourage collaboration across communities to design, develop and deliver sustainable community led climate action projects. Us, in the North Highlands & Islands and Aberdeen and the Shire. The former being operated by Thur

so Community Development Trust and the latter by Aberdeen Climate Action. Each hub is here to take a localised approach to community led climate action. In our area that means working closely with existing networks, forming new networks and for us our key aims are to celebrate existing projects and encourage communities to engage about climate action. We also see addressing community needs by reducing inequalities and a just transition key to our region.

H&I Climate Collective - Make your voice heard workshop🗣

The period after an election is one of the best times to connect with your MSPs, MPs or local councillors. In their first few months in office, elected representatives are deciding what issues and priorities they want to focus on for the years ahead - making it the perfect opportunity to make your voice heard and support the causes you care about.

In this workshop, we’ll explore how to communicate confidently with your representatives and speak up about the issues that matter to you. No issue is too small, after all, these people are elected to represent you!

New Community Fridge Planned for Shetland🍎

A new community fridge project is being developed in Shetland to help reduce food waste and support local people by sharing surplus food within the community.

The initiative is being led by local volunteers in partnership with the Hub and the Bressay Outdoor Access Group (BOAG). The group is currently looking for a publicly accessible space to host the fridge, such as a community centre or hall.

More than 700 community fridges have been set up across the UK, including two successful projects already running in Orkney.

The Hub are excited to support a similar initiative in Shetland and the benefits it could bring to the community.

Anyone interested in hosting the fridge or volunteering can get in touch at [email protected] or [email protected].

Local Place Plan for Bressay🌊

Bressay is currently developing a Local Place Plan (LPP): a community-led plan that sets out ideas and priorities for future development on the island.

Once submitted, the plan must be legally considered by the council’s planning department. We held a community engagement event at the Plant Sale on 10 May and presented the Local Place Plan to the Community Council on Tuesday 26 May.

The first draft of the plan is now complete, and we are beginning a month-long public consultation period to gather feedback from the community before the final plan is submitted in September.

If you would like to find out more or share your views, please contact Andrea at [email protected].

NW2045 RLUP Gathering🌳🌞

A couple of weeks ago individuals and organisations gathered in Elphin to listen and reflect, at the first gathering of the NorthWest 2045's Regional Land Use Partnership. The NW2045 RLUP is the only community-led RLUP pilot in Scotland.

The aim of the RLUP is to improve stakeholder collaboration, and to ensure decision making about about land use is done in a fair and inclusive way.

Fiona, our Caithness and Sutherland CDO said "it was fantastic to see such a wide spread of organisational support in Elphin and to collaborate on the way forward."
