Developing the Young Workforce North Highland Working with educators and employers to give young people access to training, job opportunities, and career resources.

To promote the Developing the Young Workforce initiative and to work with and engage school students, parents, college students and stakeholders in the initiative activities. We would like to promote what is happening around the counties from an education industry partnership perspective. The initiative focuses on bridging the gap between education and employers by providing young people with the right opportunities to enter into fulfilling jobs and careers.

This week, we were delighted to welcome the British Army to Thurso High School and North Coast Campus where they spent the day engaging with S4, S5 and S6 pupils. πŸ”₯

The first half of the sessions gave students an insight into life in the Army. Pupils learned about the different entry routes, career pathways, departments and opportunities available, as well as receiving information on pay, further education and the wide range of spots on offer. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to ask questions and explore potential future options. πŸ’¬

In the second half, the focus shifted to practical activities. Pupils were split into two teams and took part in laser clay pigeon shooting, alongside a team-building challenge. They were encouraged to reflect on their performance after their first attempt, assess their skills and teamwork, and then apply what they'd learned to improve during their second attempt. πŸ‘

Last week, a group of S2 pupils from Wick High School took trips to Thurso Newton Room to complete the Green Skills module. Pupils were tasked to test water quality, identify rock samples and soil types, calculate carbon levels, and identify various inspect species under a microscope. πŸͺ²πŸ”¬

Pupils then planned a pipeline route through a town, taking into consideration the impact on the local environment and noting down costs. Next, they built the pipeline with copper pipes, testing to ensure they were watertight. πŸ› οΈ Finally, the teams pitched their plans to the rest of the group to see which team had created an idea that would be best to invest in.

Thanks to Thurso Newton Room for another fantastic workshop! πŸ‘

Last week, Farr High School S1 pupils joined forces with a group of Thurso High S1 pupils for a full day of hands-on learning and discovery, led by Tanya from Earth Energy Education. 🌍

The group headed out to Bettyhill Windfarm for a site visit, where they measured windspeed and direction, conducted a biodiversity study using quadrat sampling, and traced the journey of energy from source to grid.

Back in the classroom, the pupils built and tested various blade designs on their own mini wind turbines, coming to conclusions about which designs made the most successful turbines.

πŸ™Œ A massive thank you to Earth Energy Education for offering such a great opportunity to our young people. It was fantastic to see both schools come together to explore the future of energy and sustainability!

πŸŽ‰ Thanks to funding from DYW, Wick High Motorcycle Club were delighted to receive their new club hoodies and motorbike lift! The Motorcycle Club aims to give pupils a start in engineering, as well as basic skills they can use all throughout their lives. 🏍️

Caitlin at Wick Laundry did a fantastic job of making the hoodies, which feature the club's crest on the chest and the DYWNH logo on the sleeve.

The Motorcycle club are currently gathering funding together for a trip to the Netherlands in September, where they hope to watch the flyaway round of the British Superbike Champoinship at Assen. Teacher Ewan Mackay has also established a school link with a school in Veghel that have motorcycle mechanics as part of their curriculum, and they are extremely keen to get Wick High pupils across to work with their pupils!

The event was set up as part of the Raising Aspirations course that the pupils have been working on throughout the year, thanks to funding from Nuvia. Pupils engaged well with the exhibitors and enjoyed the opportunity to gain insights into the world of work.
