For 13 years, HALO has been working alongside communities across Colombia to clear land affected by mines and explosive devices and help make it safer for people to live, work and build their futures.

Since 2013, we have:

• Destroyed 4,897+ explosive devices
• Cleared 1,989,037 m² of land
• Reached 61,000+ people with safety education

Today, we celebrate 13 years of work, progress and partnership with communities across Colombia.

Llegar a más de 61.000 personas con educación en comportamientos seguros.

Hoy celebramos todo lo que hemos logrado y renovamos nuestro compromiso de seguir trabajando por una Colombia más segura y libre de minas.

Technology is key to tackling the huge scale of landmine and explosive contamination in 🇺🇦.

The Guardian visited HALO teams in Kharkiv, witnessing the immense scale of contamination which threatens lives and leaves vital farmland unsafe to use.

New technologies, including drones and AI, are making mine clearance faster and safer, but clearing these deadly remnants of war will take years of work, resources and international support.

HALO clearance breathes life into Baiji railway yard, .

HALO has completed the clearance of a contaminated area at Baiji Railway Yard, helping pave the way for the restoration of a critical transport corridor.

The yard, heavily impacted by recent conflict, serves as an essential link between the Baiji refinery, northern cities including Mosul and Kirkuk, and the capital, Baghdad.

HALO's mechanical team identified and destroyed IEDs and several explosive components over a 13,606 sq metres area, reducing the threat to nearby communities and agricultural land.

With survey work now complete across the entire station area and most clearance tasks finished, the restoration of this railway network is one step closer. Improved transport links will support economic recovery, strengthen trade and help reconnect communities across the region.

What does a map have to do with making communities safer?

For Marcela Martinez, it's a vital part of humanitarian clearance. As a GIS assistant in 🇨🇴, she uses Trimble Inc. technology to help HALO teams accurately record locations and safely plan their work.

The “Women in GIS for Demining” initiative, funded by the Trimble Foundation, is helping to strengthen clearance through innovative mapping , specialized training, and mentoring other staff.

🎙️ Our CEO James Cowan joined ABC Australia’s Sunday Extra podcast to discuss HALO’s work in Kosovo, where our programme recently concluded after 27 years.

When HALO first arrived in Kosovo, 800,000 people had been displaced by conflict and much of the country was contaminated with mines and explosives.

James describes how our work has transformed 🇽🇰, which now boasts a $14 billion economy, with safe land allowing key infrastructure to be revived and the tourism industry to flourish.

James also goes on to explain how our use of drones, AI, new detection systems and other innovative technology is allowing us to accelerate clearance around the world.

Liechtenstein helps to power HALO’s mission in 🇺🇦 .

With support from the Principality of Liechtenstein, HALO teams have cleared landmines and explosives across Sumy, Kyiv, and Chernihiv oblasts.

Crucially, this support has also allowed HALO to install photovoltaic solar systems at mobile accommodation units in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv oblasts.

🔋 Equipped with battery storage, these systems provide reliable backup power during outages, helping our deminers to safely continue their vital work.
