Thank you

The Dumfries and Galloway Fine Arts Society launches a May exhibition at this Saturday 2nd May 2026.
Chair of the Society, Paul O’Keeffe, says:
“We’re delighted to be exhibiting with Eskdalemuir Hub again, following our debut there with our recent mid-winter exhibition. Happily, that was well received. This time, our artists have focused on spring and summer themes and tones. From the Bosphorus to Ben Lomond, the Med to the merses of Scotland. And they have used a range of media: oil, acrylic, mixed media, watercolour, playful hallmarked Scottish silver, and repurposed
slate.”
Eleven artists are exhibiting over twenty pieces of work in the Hub’s Exhibition Hall. They are: Gulseven Atay Coles; Alex Buchanan; Mary Carberry; Graham Cooke; Ruth Hanson; Roger Lever; Barry Mitchell; Martin Sutton; Moira Weatherup; Shirley Weatherup and Kathleen Woods. All the artists works are for sale.
Eskdalemuir Hub is open seven days a week. The café and bar serves lunch and light snacks and is open Monday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Hot food is served until 2.45pm.

Topic of workshop

In this workshop we will explore drawing techniques aimed at improving accuracy and the ability to handle complexity through simplification.

What we will do

We will examine how well we can measure by eye. We will look at finding a point of view; the use of one shape to represent a whole composition, use mass drawing techniques as well as line drawing methods. We will try both fast and slow methods of capturing reality.

In the morning Elizabeth will demonstrate some of the ideas we will put into practice. We will work through a series of short drawing exercises to hone skills and see how the various techniques work for you. We will look at still life groups including some more complex subjects.

In the afternoon, there will be the opportunity to explore these techniques further through a variety of exercises, so everyone tries something new. We will take the final drawing to a more finished stage as time allows.

Our next workshop -
Who is it for

The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience - if you are just beginning, and would like to learn these useful skills or if you are a more experienced artist who would like to refresh your drawing techniques.

Remember this workshop is on Saturday book now it’s sure to be really informative and fun

In this workshop, you will explore what is known as ‘visual perspective’ using tone, colour, scale and texture and see how it works in painting. You will get to know the nine main guidelines for creating deep or shallow visual space. These useful guidelines are applicable to any medium or any style of painting from highly representational to totally abstracted.
You will come away with a greater understanding of creating ‘visual perspective’ in your work, and how all subject matter – landscape, still life, or portrait, may be interpreted in many ways depending on what you want to express. You will have a series of studies to refer to and the beginnings of how these guidelines may be applied in a more considered piece of work.

Who is it for and recommended medium
The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience – if you are just beginning, and would like to learn these useful guidelines, or if you are a more experienced artist who would like to refresh this skill of picture making, you are welcome.

Any medium is suitable, but acrylics, gouache or pastel are probably the most useful for the class. Bring your favourites, and two or three photo references. A full materials/equipment/references check list will be sent to you by the tutor on booking.
