Friends of Thorne Community Wood

Friends of Thorne Community Wood The Friends of Thorne Community Wood are a group of volunteers who help maintain and develop Thorne Community Wood.

Thorne Community Wood is an area of former agricultural land which was purchased by Thorne Moorends Town Council in 1993 to create a community woodland. The final stage of the main tree planting was completed in the winter of 2001 but the wood needs a as much, if not more, care at this stage of its life. The Friends continue to offer this through practical work and promotional activities. Thorne M

oorends Town Council, with the help of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council Woodland Department and grant assistance from the Forestry Commission, have endeavoured to enhance the local recreational environment for residents and visitors alike. Thorne Community Wood was also recently awarded Nature Reserve status.

Regular visitor to the wood, Amie Lake-Knott, is planning a fundraising activity at the end of March to raise money for the Friends. Amie is a volunteer with the Friends, and can also often be found training on site as a member of the local running club, Thorne Twilight Trotters. She is undertaking a 24hr sponsored run on the site, and says ‘My fundraising activity is to run as many 5k laps of the woods as possible in a 24 hour period, only stopping for fuel and comfort breaks. This will take place in March 2025 and all money raised will go to the Friends of Community Woods group to buy the resources, training, and equipment needed to contain maintaining this great local greenspace!‘.

The Friends are a small group of local volunteers, and the money raised will help them continue their work, which includes projects such as keeping the wood accessible and improving biodiversity. If you would like to support the Friends and donate for this event, please visit the GoFundMe at
