Thatcham u3a AGM, Friday 12th June at Frank Hutchings Hall starting 2pm.

It is very important that we have at least 60 members attending so we have the official number required for the business to take place under the regulations of the Charity Commission. The AGM generally doesn’t last long. There will be a super raffle so come prepared with cash to buy your tickets and bags to take your prizes home in! Tea, coffee and biscuits will also be served.

The speaker after the AGM is Jennifer Cowling with her talk entitled ‘Those Extraordinary Things we Say’. Jennifer says, "Are you the type of person who happily uses phrases such as 'a turn up for the book', 'cupboard love', 'being taken to the cleaners', and many others, in your conversation oblivious to the fact that your listeners may not know what you're talking about? Why is our language so strange and difficult to analyse at times? What are its origins?”Her talk is a light-hearted look at figures of speech and how we use them.

Thatcham u3a General Meeting, Friday 8th May 2026, 2-4pm at the Frank Hutchings Hall

Free for members, non-members £2

As usual we will have tea and biscuits and the opportunity to chat before the speakers, and our book and jigsaw swap tables will be available where you can take home a book or jigsaw for free.

The speakers for our General Meeting this month are from Newbury Street Pastors who go out late at night to help people in Newbury town centre.

Street Pastors are an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems, engaging with people by caring, listening and talking.
They are church members who are willing to offer support, practical help and a visible ministry to those who are out in the town late at night. They reassure folk who may feel vulnerable, help reduce the fear of crime, provide a listening ear and offer genuine, non-judgmental pastoral support to those who need help. They are not about preaching but about helping people – the gospel is at the heart of what they do and why they do it but not at the forefront of what they say.

Sometimes caring, listening and helping on the streets on a Friday or Saturday night is straight forward. Calming down a tussle between night time revellers or ensuring someone safely catches their night bus home. Making sure people are in safe company, administering basic first aid and offering them water, flip flops or lollipops to help them sober up or raise their sugar levels if they have drunk too much. People act as they do because they often have underlying problems in their lives and they don’t know how to deal with them or they are trying to block them out.

There are times when people’s lives spill out onto the streets. An argument at home, mental health challenges and homelessness. These situations are sometimes difficult to spot and challenging to engage with. Their training programme develops skills to handle such situations. Sometimes just their presence can disperse a tense situation or have a calming influence.
They patrol by walking slowly through Newbury town centre within the sight of the cameras, looking and observing for those who may need help or a listening ear. On some nights they can walk about 6 miles, so it’s also a good form of exercise!

That’s why they exist. Newbury Street Pastors patrol the town centre, caring, listening and helping anyone we encounter. They are trained to help those who may be vulnerable and in difficult situations. They seek to serve the police and the local authority and help take the strain of the incredible amount of emergency calls that are made on Friday and Saturday nights.

This month's outing by the Walking Group was from Aldermaston to Beenham and back in a gentle loop of just under 4 miles. the weather stayed kind to us - not too warm and dry! The Bluebells were out in force through the woods.

Just a reminder to our followers that our normal coffee morning which happens on the first Friday of the month isn’t happening on 3rd April as it’s Good Friday. Also on 1st May the Baptist Church cafe is being used for a wedding.
So we are combining April & May’s coffee mornings into one on Friday 24th April. Usual time usual place

Thatcham u3a General Meeting Friday 13th March, 2pm - 4pm, Frank Hutchings Hall

Our speaker this month is Dr Nick Young, a local historian. Nick is a member of Thatcham Historical Society and Berkshire Local History Association. His talk will be titled "Thatcham Then and Now". The talk is associated with Nick's book 'Thatcham Then and Now' and is a good starting point for those new to the area as well as long standing residents where he will show old photos and then describe the history of that scene and show how it has changed.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served at 2pm before the speaker starts. There will also be book and jigsaw swap tables open for the duration.

Free for members, non-members £2

The Craft Group made some ‘vases’ from felt at the last meeting. They are modelled on an empty tin can. They can also be used as a ‘useful pot to put things in!’

We discussed making some felt flowers at the next meeting, to put in them. What do you think?

Craft Group's January project was to make hexagonal coasters. They are cut with a template from 2 different fabrics and a piece of quilt batting. No excuse for rings on the furniture now!

This morning our walking group had a lovely stroll in the still air along the Kennet canal from Northcroft Leisure Contre to Benham Lock and back. Just a light sprinkling of rain as we were finishing!

Songsters were at it again. Today (Saturday 20 Dec), they entertained a large crowd in Thatcham Library with a medley of Christmas songs. Loads of families were there and everyone enjoyed it and joined in with many of the songs, particularly Jingle Bells
