⚠️ Red and Amber weather warnings for extreme heat have been issued for many parts of the UK until midnight on Thursday June 25.

People living with dementia are likely to be more vulnerable in hot weather, and with potentially record-breaking temperatures on the way, it's vitally important to take extra caution.

If you’re supporting someone with dementia, here are a few things that can help:

Make sure the person is dressed appropriately. Try light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibres.

Keep the house as cool as possible. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day - especially in south-facing rooms. In the evening, open the windows to let the warm air out and the colder air in.

Avoid the midday sun. Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (between 11am and 3pm). Seek out plenty of shade and reapply sunscreen regularly when out.

Find ways to cool off. Help them take a cool bath or shower. Place a washcloth and some iced water nearby to dab themselves with.

Stay hydrated. Leave beakers or jugs of water within easy reach. Provide high-water-content foods like ice lollies, jelly, ice cream, soup, and fruit such as melon.

Ask friends and neighbours to pop in and check the person is ok if you don’t live near them. Perhaps the visitor could stay, have a drink with the person, and make sure the person has everything they need.

📢 Please share so we can keep everyone living with dementia safe in the heat.

SPONSOR OUR RUNNING TEAM!!

These lovely people might not look like the most likely team, but they have more in common than you’d think…. Not only are they all volunteers at Thame Senior Friendship Centre, and all residents of Thame for 16 years or more, but they all have links to Chinnor RFC Thame and will all be running the CPM Thame 10k in aid of Thame Senior Friendship Centre and the Memories Café Thame this month.

Mike, former Chinnor rugby player, has kept up his fitness and is the only member of the team who has run the Thame 10K before.

Hope is also keen a rugby player and enjoys martial arts to a high level. She believes her youth and fitness will see her through her first 10K run.

Ann has no sporting background whatsoever! She started running less than a year ago, has now joined Thame Runners and will be running the 10K for the first time.

Thame Senior Friendship Centre, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, is proud to support older and isolated people in Thame. It provides positive places for older people seeking companionship and stimulation. The Friendship Centre offers a whole day out including hot lunch, while the Memories Café provides support for those with dementia and their carers.
Mike, Hope and Ann would be grateful for any sponsorship, all of which will go directly to the charity. Thank you for your support!

Veteran news anchor Jon Snow has shared that he’s living with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.

Jon was diagnosed in 2023, two years after stepping down from his most famous role presenting Channel 4 News.

He and his wife, neurologist Dr Precious Lunga, are now speaking publicly for the first time to help raise vital awareness of a condition affecting around 1 million people across the UK.

Thank you to Jon and Precious for supporting Alzheimer’s Society, and for their courage and openness to bring much-needed attention to dementia 💙
