Cuttlebrook

Cuttlebrook Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve is owned by Thame Town Council and maintained by the Cuttle Brook Conservation Volunteers.

We hold regular work-parties on the third Sunday and last Wednesday morning each month starting at 10am. Discover the rich diversity of wildlife on Thame's award-winning nature reserve. A quick, circular walk can take just twenty minutes. If you have an hour or more, there's a network of paths with plenty to see - and it's different every time you visit.

Book now to see 'Wilding' on Monday 1st June 7pm - the wonderful story of the Knepp rewilding project.

The land at Knepp is not conducive to modern intensive farming. 320 metres of heavy Low Weald clay over a bedrock of limestone, the soil is like concrete in summer and unfathomable porridge in winter. For seventeen years after taking over the 3,500-acre Estate from his grandparents in 1983, Charlie Burrell did his utmost to make Knepp Home Farm profitable but it was impossible to compete with larger, industrialised farms on better soils. And so the Knepp rewilding project began......

Come and watch the story unfold at Thame Cinema on 1st June 7pm.

Lots of birdsong on the reserve this morning, including from this pair of blackcaps. Other warblers seen and heard were chiffchaff, whitethroat, sedge, marsh and reed warblers. Nice to see swifts overhead, hear a distant cuckoo and see a little egret.

This area borders the Cuttle Brook down to the River Thame. The building works will be on the higher ground not the flood plain. It is north of the Oxford Road up to the bypass.

The main housing site in Thame’s second Neighbourhood Plan (TNP2) was granted planning permission by South Oxfordshire District Council on 7 May 2026. The planning application, P23/S4262/FUL, for 111 homes at Land North of Oxford Road has been through five rounds of amendments since it was first submitted at the end of 2023, including a reduction in the number of homes from 154 to 111.

The District Council judged that the proposal was compliant with the development plan and that material objections had been overcome or could be managed through planning conditions.

The Town Council originally objected to the application but in December 2025 felt able to support the latest amendments, while making comments regarding First Homes and the Haddenham-Thame active travel connection.

The decision was therefore delegated to District Council officers, using the District’s recently altered scheme for delegation, rather than it being taken to their Planning Committee.

Further details on the planning permission can be found in the District Council’s report (available via P23/S4262/FUL under ‘Documents’, then ‘Decision’, and the document title is ‘Delegated Report’ dated 11/05/2026).

Please contact Thame Town Council via [email protected] or call 01844 212833 if you have any questions.
