Have you ever wondered why the 10th of October is known as "Fair Day" in Tewkesbury?
Michaelmas Day is celebrated on the 29th of September, this may not seem relevant to "Tewkesbury Mop Fair" because the "Mop Fair" is tied to the harvest season and not the calendar. However, when "King James I" granted a new charter in 1609 it stated that the fair be held on the feast of St Michael in September. But when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1752, 11 days were dropped from that year and events associated with the end of the harvest were moved 11 days later to the 10th of October. This date is known as "Old Michaelmas Day" and since 1752 this has been the date of Tewkesbury's "Mop Fair", and it is because of this the 10th of October will always be known as "Fair Day", even in modern times it is this date that the royal charter refers to.
In later years the 9th of October was added to the fair and was known as "Charity Day" with attending Showmen donating part of their day's takings to local charities.
October 9th & 10th will continue to be Tewkesbury Mop Fair's dates unless one of these dates falls on a Sunday, when this happens the fair is moved forward or backward one or two days because the Mop fairs royal charter states that "The fair can not open on the Lords day" (Sunday)..
We hope you will find this information about the "Mop Fair" useful; we will continue to promote the traditions of "Tewkesbury's Mop Fair", and we hope to see you at the event 🙂
