The "Purple £" – Why Accessibility Matters in Tewkesbury 🦽💷

Last Wednesday, Liz from the Tewkesbury Access Forum Tewkesbury Access Forum spoke at the weekly Black Bear Tewkesbury Social Group (which meets every Wednesday at 10:00 am).

Her talk focused on the "Purple £"—the massive spending power of disabled consumers. She highlighted a crucial point: local businesses frequently miss out on revenue simply by failing to make their spaces and services accessible. Right now, disabled individuals navigating Tewkesbury encounter a wide range of physical, sensory, and environmental obstacles. These barriers severely restrict independence and safety.

Local advocates, including members of the Tewkesbury Access Forum, have highlighted several critical barriers across the town

🦽💪 Power in numbers! Did you know that when multiple people report local accessibility issues—like broken pavements, missing dropped kerbs, or bad signage—councils and organizations are forced to act faster? Let’s make Tewkesbury accessible for everyone

You can report broken paving slabs, faulty pedestrian crossing audio, and obstacles blocking footpaths, all from your phone. So nice when venues have accessible toilets!
Of course, some buildings in Tewkesbury don't have a suitable layout to make sure they can provide disabled facilities, but thank you to those that can!

Great news!

We’re proud to announce that we’ve received a grant from Barnwood Trust for a two year project, 'Nature Without Barriers: The Inclusion Project'. This project includes the installation of accessible infrastructure, such as wheel-chair friendly gates, seating, signage and the creation of designated parking spaces for visitors with disabilities, alongside inclusive public engagement throughout. This funding will enable us to work on removing barriers that prevent people from accessing and enjoying the nature reserve, creating positive change for disabled people and people with mental health conditions in our community.
